new military mechanics........ dont like it
Call me old fashioned from playing this game since it launch in EA years ago, played with lots of mods so maybe i am just use to old ways, but i am NOT enjoying the new mechanics at all. 5 troops for a unit per tower/keep ?? and to top it off, the range that it provides protection for is dreadful small. I have a manor house and keep together at the north part the city, then the church and then houses like in the middle, industrial areas below that, the keep wont send troops to patrol because its to far away?? I have the zones painted, there is a watch tower built in the cluster of the houses (which looks stupid) and yet no patrols. they get the fortification bonus but i cant get patrols.

I don't like this, I get the old way one keep could have 100 soldiers, so it should be tied to barrack space and if you want the 5 units then make it a commoner is a knight/captain or something and you can build 5 more.

You build a keep, you get 5 soldiers, but the barracks you can choose have 8-12 spots, so how do i get more units, build another giant ugly tower?

I like the unit of 5 get weapons assigned to them, the old way was tedious and archers are really cool now, I assume they will man the towers ,but again the range for the barracks to staff towers is really small.

plus, 5 per unit seems really small to be sending on missions. Unless i am missing something here.

The keep has your first soldier company, to get more companies you need to unlock and build encampments (archers, spearmen, swordsmen).

Note that while soldiers can be used for patrols and as watchmen their main purpose is to be sent on missions for the king, patrollers and watchmen are much better utilised for those jobs

I am def missing how to assign watchmen then, I built the manor, tax office and then followed the quest to get the keep, which gave me 5 soldiers. armory for spears. I have no idea how to get ppl to patrol as the 5 in the keep wont do it. I have towers built around the city which gives me the fortification buff at least

Ya I just found it. I don't mean to be ripping on your game and your hard work as i've played the EA game over 200 hours but man, some of the stuff like spending a boat load of cash on spamming splendor with limited options just to unlock a basic need to upgrade a house is enough to make me just quit. Especially when all you have is 1 coin per plank to trade and your locked into horrible slow progression curve but at least I found the watch tower mechanic.
yeah.. it does seem overly complex now. For combat to be so simple, which is great, getting to the point of combat is the most complex part of the game so far.. and its a city builder/survival.

You don't need to spam splendour to progress though, you only need 25 to reach the first important milestones and you have a lot of decorations to use since all common decorations now give splendour instead of beautification if placed as part of a monument.

I think you might be overthinking this a bit, start simple and go step by step for each estate separately in the beginning, it doesn't need grind at all to get to the mid game

I just noticed that, adding trees etc to even the market now raises splendor. Its still a money grind but at least you have options now when starting a game about increasing trade etc etc.
I guess I am still stuck playing in the EA ways and modded versions of course spoil you.

off topic a bit but as far as ppl saying performance issues, I turned off one of the new settings and keep the 2nd one on i believe, and using shadows at medium and im locked over 120 (I put the cap on) gpu is 80% cpu is 10, ram is only 4gig used. all temps are cool. Id be around 150 ish without a cap. and the game still looks great. I think ultra shadows and the 1st new graphic settings eat into gpu performance. But i am super happy with stable cool temps and 120 fps. no stutters

i7-14700k, 4070 oc , 32 ddr5 6000 for reference.

There are so many hidden mechanics I'm discovering while playing, I love the new system. Finally it really feels like I have an army. Guarding / Patrolling is one of the best ideas I've ever seen. This way we need to think carefully for what we will use our company. I used mostly for patrolling since it helps houses to level up to a higher density and I can't wait to see the missions. However, I have to say it's pretty complicated at the moment and we might need a better tutorial. I'll wait to see if people will produce some youtube tutorials about how to use the military best.

is there enemies? whats the point of the soldiers

No enemies
but watchmen are like a resource mechanic to get higher density homes (makes them feel safer) missions are soldiers just off and complete quests etc but the rewards can be great from them. But nothing will attack you.

I'm guessing maybe in the future DLC's. At the moment, enemies are within the quests. Guards / Patrols are just for the city itself. I'm imagining they keep the law in order, so these hungry serfs don't steal from the commoners :crtevil:
There are no enemies and neither a plan to add any kind of onscreen combat to Foundation. Soldiers are only meant for missions and if the player wants also patrols

There was a mod in EA version that added bandits, it was a cool feature that could be created here. Basically if a villager gets pissed off for whatever reason , instead of just leaving they become a bandit and can attempt to steal goods from warehouses etc, so you need guards around arrest them. You can build a prison at your keep and bandits would spend time in the clink b4 becoming available to let back in. Bandits could start fires which your builders would run to a well for water and put the fire out. Not sure if that mod will happen again but it added a bit to the game that I personally felt was pretty cool
