Recruiting Soldiers

So, recently I unlocked spearmen and I have been able to recruit 2 but now when I try to it just says no militiamen available. I have barracks to fit 10 people, I have 50 spears, and I have unemployed waiting to be assigned. What am I doing wrong?

Your spear company isn't assigned on a mission or anything is it? You can't add troops when they're away...another potential are your unassigned workers could be queued up to work someplace that either isn't built or paused? I know that's thrown me off before. Hope it's something easy!

No the company is set to guard, and the unemployed are certified lazy bums.

well at first your keep can only support 1 company of 5 people
u need encampments, which will be unlocked as u unlock weapon production at tier 2
spear = spearmen
sword =swordsmen
and so on

Are your unemployed perchance residents of a monastery? If so they can't be changed to anything else.

You have to hire your recruits from your castle building´s menu, not from the book where you assign the other jobs.

No, my unemployed definitely have houses, and yes I am trying to recruit from the build menu.
