Serfs crossing the whole map for refined food - why?
I had planned on supplying refined food only for my town center, thinking myself clever because that way I can centralize all commoner+ jobs there.

Then I started satellite villages for further raw materials away from the center and after a while started wondering why the productivity of the whole darn town is going down until I saw that serfs that DO NOT NEED refined food (and are being supplied with two types of rustic food at their own little village) are literally all (ALL OF THEM) crossing the whole map to get refined food. So of course nothing gets done anymore.

This is not a mechanic that I've seen before (or never noticed).

Does anyone know if this is the intended behavior of the serfs?

The whole “serfs/commoners/whoever require X after they tried it once” mechanic is asinine and should be scrapped, in my opinion. It defies the concept of having the class system where every tier is supposed to have certain needs. Serfs should not be able to afford refined food to begin with.
Well, it is one refined food, commoners require two, and citizens require all three.

When you think of the food classifications for rustics berries, vegetables, and fish it does not seem like "living outside their class" to have a meat or bread.

I think they improperly used "refined" which back then refining school was where they taught people to have class, etc. and refineries where upper class items like jewelry and clothing made from silk rather than spun wool, etc.

That’s true, there is a lot of vague/awkward/imprecise language in the game. That said, they could as well call the bread/meat/cheese “processed food” or “delicacy” or “rjhyix”, does not matter. The rose by any other name…
What matters is this is a separate category, a step above the previous one. In terms of gameplay, reserving this kind of food for the upper classes would alleviate the problem the OP described. The middle ground would be the serfs buy refined food only if it is sold very close to their houses (not workplaces).

Yeah honestly I would not consider meat a refined food or processed, considering it is a butchered animal hacked into pieces back them. I suppose a sausage could be considered a refined or processed meat.

Also kind of weird the only source of meat is from boar hunting. I mean no chicken, cattle, or pig farms.

Having played a bunch of Kingdom Come Deliverance 1 and 2 recently most meats ere either poached or bought from a butcher shop in that time period.

Did you learn medieval history through video games?

Only the wealthier people could afford meat. Simple folks consumed poultry and fish but their main diet was grains and legumes if I remember correctly. Bread and cheese were not even remotely considered to be refined food, that's for sure. But then again, the peasantry baked their own bread.

In Anno, you can prohibit the consumption of a good for a social class. It would be nice to simply add this option, if a developer comes across this :)
there should be an edict banning serfs from eating anything other than fish and berry

I have not noticed distance to be a thing in this mater, but most likely because i allways play around it anway.

I allways build satelites with a church/chapel, well, tax, patrol and 2 food sources.
Satelites never have commoners, but all needs for serfs settled.

Simply have the granery in you satelite stock max bread (easiest to maintain) and have it sold local at a stall. no more travels.

Just accept that once you have introduced refined food, ALL need to be supplied with it.
Might not be the case, as stated above, but solves quite some headaches for me =)

I fully agree and it doesn't matter what they call it, refined, luxury, whatever, it is a stupid blunder having them eat it once and then forever craving it.

I coulsd see it if you ran out of all simple foods like 0 berries, 0 veggies etc then they eat a sandwich because it was available as the only food item and then crave it, but not once in the many many, too too many games that I've played have I ever run out of simple foods, and never even gotten close to no berries.

Maybe it was meant to play like that... run out of serf food but have commoner food, the serfs eat what is available and then want it after that, but as far as I understand it, this is not designed to happen. The game needs updating to take care of a lot of niggly lil' bugs and inconsistencies that should have been taken care of before they went off to suck up at discords teats.
