But (you knew there was a but coming)
1. You won't likely have the resources for a large abbey early-game, but people will still need service through rustic churches
2. If your village is large or spread out enough, you will need several churches. If you want to only have monastic churches, I would recommend building the substitution for your rustic church first, and then delete the old one
3. Remember that people will walk across the whole map to fulfill their needs, so consider that in your setup
4. If you want only that one abbatial church, I will bet you 100% that you will not be able to fulfill a large population's need for service despite having enough space in theory. All of your logistics will suffer when people spend most of their day walking across the map to fulfill their need for service.
So in short, it's possible but size isn't everything ;-)
In fact, I think I'll give that a try in my next playthrough, just to see how much effort it would be to make it work. Thanks for the inspiration :-)
