Early game it's good to put the granary right next to the market. Producers don't move anything they produce.
Granary, Storage Yard and Builders will go any distance they need to to get what they stock or need to build with (short distances always better for flow). Any one who needs an item goes and gets it from the nearest source. So ideally your market trader is right next the granary for short turn around time to be selling again while the granary worker keeps going back and forth to the gathering hut. Also adding a tent increases the amount a stall can hold.
Optimising worker needs so they're close by and can get back to work quicker is important (and add benches - they like to sit out of work time and it also creates pathing destinations)
HOWEVER... start with the cloth over the stall. The stall works when it has stock regardless of if the worker is there. So the more you can get on the stall the longer it'll work before it needs refilling.
@opiscoward A screenshot with some details of the market and/or a villager would be great in order to better be able to help
Can you post a screenshot of the layout? It might be easier to see the issue that way.
They key I've found is to put storage for the Market as close to the Market Stalls as possible. Let the Transporters do all the walking.
