Commoners??

So, I'm at the point where I need commoners for buildings in the EA version. To get commoners, I seem to need clothes, to make clothes, I need commoners??? Also bought common wares, but none of my villagers buys those. I'm stuck xD

You don't need clothes to get commoners, you only need to fulfil your Serfs' current needs (click on one of them to see which needs you are missing)

I have all essential needs met. Additional says they need a Church, but I have no options to build one :(

Both Essential and Additional needs are necessary to promote villagers.

Are you still in the tutorial "advice" quests? Otherwise you most definitely should have a church to build in the building menu.

I thought the initial, basic church would appear in the build menu, quite early in a new game. Or is there a selection we need to meet (purchase) in the tech tree for it?

Lupus: check in the tech tree. Do you see a basic church item in there. Not a fancy one, those are farther down in the tech tree. One near the top.
Also, please recheck all the structures in your build menu, very carefully. Maybe you just missed it there.

Regarding your comment about common wares. I don't recall that Serf level villagers need common wares. So if you are buying those, and placing them in a market stall/table, they will never be purchased by your serfs. Click on any serf. When the info panel (small window) opens for the serf, look for the needs listed there. Place your pointer on the food line (for example), and you will see a mouse pointer hint/note, giving you the exact, different items that can meet that one specific need. You don't have to supply them all of those items, but at least one of the items you see listed there. Once you have promoted a Commoner, do the same thing. Click on the commoner, look at the info panel, and point your mouse pointer over all the needs for this level of a villager (the Commoner).

Church popped up just after my second post. Restarted the game for the 5th time and suddenly it unlocked. Thanks for the hints though :)
