As the user above stated, there will be specific quests that show up, that indicate some kind of high-status individual (or small group of individuals) that will come through, and those individuals are important that you get their need-happiness properly met, so that you can earn the specific reward they will give you. They could arrive during the same time, as the random other visitors are wandering about. So keep an eye on them.
I can't remember at what point in the game, that the random visitors begin to arrive. But it could be at the exact moment you build your first Monastery structure. So it's best to have ample (overage supply of) food and goods before the trigger-point hits you. And sometimes the high-class individuals will need a luxury item.
You may also want to check the new official Wiki for Foundation. Maybe there is info about visitors there. (Not sure how updated it is yet.)
The hospitium cost me about 50g each month, but i get about 200g in donations.... so, i do not agree with Pico22.
