Wheat Farms: size and shape

What is the optimal size for a wheat farm? I want the farm to be as productive as possible, but I don't want to zone real-estate the is not used. Does it matter what shape the farm is? as round as possible vs. long and thin? Does it make any difference?

P.S. (It would be nice if the game provided some assistance when creating a field - telling me the farmers can do more, or that is just the right amount of area, or that is way bigger than the farmers will ever use.)

Use the biggest painting zone. CTRL + Zoom. This is the optimal size to be as productive as possible.

I create an area I know to be too large for them when I first start the farm. Then I wait for the next planting season and adjust the area to what they actually plant.

The size also varies when how efficient the workers are as well, more efficient more area. So you have to adjust farm size as Duurti stated.
