How is the Tavern supposed to be working?
It's been at 0/20 Customers all the time. It has a cook and a guy serving food/beer plus the items needed are right next to it.

Am I missing something?

i think its a luxury thing and only villagers with that needs luxury goes to the tavern i would say only full citiziens wants a tavern

Only citizens and soldiers drink wine or beer (if there re no closer luxury stall).
The coocked meal is then consumed with dring. It is not a food ned per se, but an extra source of gold coins incoming.

Similar thing happening with me except i do get 1 or 2 customers. I believe the problem is that there is market stalls selling luxury items that is closer to the villagers than the tavern. They won't go to the tavern if they can get their requirements from somewhere closer.

Hello,
I don't explain why but you must have minima 36 soldiers to obtein finally 6 knights..
So try to build 4 wooden keep to make a wood chateau to put all yours soldiers together..
Always put you tavern between yours barracks and the village where you have some citizens..
Tavern was not necessary to be big and expensive but a kitchen and service counter was the must.
After a war , you will see the income of the tavern climb between 2000 and 4000 gold ^^
That always working to me ! ^^.
of course during a war the income decrease ..

I don't really get this entire army thing and war thing.
I have like 30+ soldiers and I got asked for help, I sent htem all (fully trained) and they all died. How do you even win something?

Did you arm your soldiers with swords? You get 5 free swords when you build your first garrison. After that, you need to craft your own. (can't remember if any traders sell swords)
Arming soldiers is done on the soldier page of the army tab. Eventually you will want to upgrade soldiers with spears that you get as rewards for completing difficult and extremely difficult missions.

Once my tavern started working it made me several thousand gold per month.
I had to scale up beer production.
