There should be a distance indicator in the villager list showing how far they live from their work. As long as they are 150 m or less, they're good.
PD: in the past i always did a different market for every item, then i learned that you can make multiples markets (on the same market building menu) for every item and it changed everything on how you distribute residential zones.
Ofc this works, but I never destroyed houses. Works better without IMXP (make them less angry - more newcomers ;) There are never enough newcomers ;) )
But I can't imagine how walk from house to work wouldn't matter. Even if there is fixed work time, walking time increases overall cycle time, so villager works less in the end. I'm pretty sure that I haven't seen villager "idling" at work, like they do at homes, to compensate for walking time.
I haven't play for year and half, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious. I returned to this game when I'm finally able to fully appreciate how stressless and not punishing it is... so I'm curious about this, because rn its only thing causing me little stress.... checking and worrying about home-work distance.
Sry for reviving this, but IMO it is better to polish already existing topic for future searches.
Pause the game, evict everyone, promote as many as you want to, and you will never end up with someone living in a house that is above their "station" - the promoted people will upgrade a house near their work and the people who were not promoted will not move back in with them.
Also helps to have some blank space for building during this process , so that as the lower classes 'lose' houses to the upper class upgrading those houses, they can build new ones.
I have two berry structures, with a total of six workers here, who have home-to-work-distance of 154m, 156m or 157m. They have been working here for a long time now, and have no negative home warnings.
I also have three transporters working at a granary, and they have home-to-work-distance of 173m or 181m, and they also have no negative home warnings.
Now I do have two quite-distant transporters at 277m and 287m home-to-work-distance, and they do have unhappiness and a warning (in the Book) saying "Unable to find a house close enough to my workplace."
So maybe the "critical limit" allowed by the game mechanics, is 200m ? Or higher at 225m, 250m or 275 ? I don't know.
Edit to add: I just found one Transporter in my village with a home-to-work distance of 208m, and he has been happy, with no housing issues, for some time now.
Those positions require a higher level villager. IIRC, they need to be at least a commoner level. Do you have enough villagers at that level to fill those jobs?
For completion, 1 hex was approximately 100m in radius maybe a bit less closer to 75-80m but around there.
