Housing and distance to jobs
I've been reading that it is important in this game that people live near their jobs, or else they will waste a lot of their work time just walking. My question is how do I check how far each person lives from their job, and how do I fix things if I find someone travelling too far? (And also, how far is "too far"?). Many thanks.

Too far is anything more than 150 m. You'll get a warning that the employee can't find housing close enough if they live too far away.

There should be a distance indicator in the villager list showing how far they live from their work. As long as they are 150 m or less, they're good.

So how do I fix it if someone is too far?

Villagers will automatically relocate to be within the 150m radius from their workplace you have to then also ensure they can fulfil all their needs in a 1-2 hex radius around that house so they stay as efficient as possible

Also feel free to destroy houses. The residents will move or build new ones. Just don't destroy too many at once.

base your residential zone depending on the market influence, then try to make industrial zones. I think the game is intended to function basically on the market, because in the end everything goes to there.

PD: in the past i always did a different market for every item, then i learned that you can make multiples markets (on the same market building menu) for every item and it changed everything on how you distribute residential zones.

Hahah yeah that was a big one for me, when I learned you could edit additional stands into an existing market. Blew my mind :P

Ofc this works, but I never destroyed houses. Works better without IMXP (make them less angry - more newcomers ;) There are never enough newcomers ;) )

Why is everything under 150m ok though? I saw that answer in more topics. I can imagine that walking from work to home is part of "spend time in house" cycle, so it doesn't matter if villager gets home instantly and spend two days in house or he walks for day and spend day at home (example numbers).
But I can't imagine how walk from house to work wouldn't matter. Even if there is fixed work time, walking time increases overall cycle time, so villager works less in the end. I'm pretty sure that I haven't seen villager "idling" at work, like they do at homes, to compensate for walking time.

I haven't play for year and half, so sorry if I'm missing something obvious. I returned to this game when I'm finally able to fully appreciate how stressless and not punishing it is... so I'm curious about this, because rn its only thing causing me little stress.... checking and worrying about home-work distance.

Sry for reviving this, but IMO it is better to polish already existing topic for future searches.

Every time your pop goes up 50, evict everyone from every house at the start of the month. They will get upset for about a month, sure. But in the end they will all relocate to houses as close to their workplace as possible. Just make sure you have decent stockpiles of food, goods, and gold before the mass eviction - while they are relocating, they will produce much less than they would if they were settled.

Pause the game, evict everyone, promote as many as you want to, and you will never end up with someone living in a house that is above their "station" - the promoted people will upgrade a house near their work and the people who were not promoted will not move back in with them.

Also helps to have some blank space for building during this process , so that as the lower classes 'lose' houses to the upper class upgrading those houses, they can build new ones.

I know this is an old thread, but wanted to say that the game team must have changed the amount of "Home to work distance"that is allowed, without causing a negative issue with the villager in question.

I have two berry structures, with a total of six workers here, who have home-to-work-distance of 154m, 156m or 157m. They have been working here for a long time now, and have no negative home warnings.

I also have three transporters working at a granary, and they have home-to-work-distance of 173m or 181m, and they also have no negative home warnings.

Now I do have two quite-distant transporters at 277m and 287m home-to-work-distance, and they do have unhappiness and a warning (in the Book) saying "Unable to find a house close enough to my workplace."

So maybe the "critical limit" allowed by the game mechanics, is 200m ? Or higher at 225m, 250m or 275 ? I don't know.

Edit to add: I just found one Transporter in my village with a home-to-work distance of 208m, and he has been happy, with no housing issues, for some time now.

Those positions require a higher level villager. IIRC, they need to be at least a commoner level. Do you have enough villagers at that level to fill those jobs?

What exactly is a "hex"?
Minotorious Jan 16, 2024 @ 6:33pm
This is a very old thread and a hex was a map tile territory you could buy as they were hexagonal in shape, now they are more organically shaped.

For completion, 1 hex was approximately 100m in radius maybe a bit less closer to 75-80m but around there.

How do you evict evict everyone/anyone/someone? While this thread may be old, the situation remains relevant. FWIW, I don't consider this a bug. This happens in real life still to this day.
