I am guessing your village consists of newcommers and serfs at this point? They only have a single food need while commoners and above have two food needs. This means that they will only buy from the first stall in your market (I am guessing the berries are there) and would only buy from the second (guessing bread) if the first one is empty. Once you upgrade them to requiring a second food source need they will start buying from both slots.
That means that if you have berries in slot 1 they will prefer berries and will only buy bread when you run out of berries. Commoners have 2 food types though so they would buy a berry and a bread while leaving the 3rd slot (fish maybe) alone.
Personally I like bread in slot 1, as i can always produce more of it, which isn't the case for berries and fish. Others switch up which food is in the first slot of different markets, so they all get eaten more or less equally. Yet other players use single stall markets, but i would not recommend that because having control over which foods are eaten more and which foods are allowed to stock up is a very valuable thing imo.

MINOOOOOO!!!!! One of these days I will best you!!!
Note again it will not be fully random but will depend on which stall is the closest to each villager's house but it will definitely be a more equal distribution to "everyone buys berries from the first slot"
knowing that the granaries work in 1,2,3,4 helps too.
