Residential Zone Question

I did a quick search (not exhaustive), but didn't see this addressed. Once I zone an area and a home is built, do I need to leave the residential zone up, or can I erase it? Will there be any adverse effects to my homes if the residential zoning is removed?

For now you can erase it without any problems, in the future though houses outside of a residential zone will be demolished by the villagers

Well so far how it is it works quite nicely to control housing. wich is needed if you are building many seperate settlements. when i am done with one settlement i simply unzone and forbid density upgrades manually and can be sure the next arriving settler is not moving in the wrong village.
plus there is already a way to delete housing areas: simply unzone and raze the houses manually...
