Set up a warehouse and sell planks and cut stone on trade route. Watch your expenses. Dont go building warehouses everywhere. Make sure you are financially well off before committing to a church etc.

I am not that good at the game but this is what I have learnt so far.

Just don't stop immigration, the best way to make money is your own villagers, the income it's overwhelming compared to trading system (for now), in the meantime don't build too much high-upkeep buildings (like the church), build a market in the very center of your village with at least 2 good stalls (3 if you can reach a water source resulting in some extra fish) and farm barries.
It works just perfectly, resulting for me in a weekly 1166 consumption and 368 upkeep with 45 villagers, try it by yourself
P.S.: Don't forget to assign at least 2 market tenders in this process ;)
