1. markets can only take goods from warehouses/granarys This only applies to markets. Your baker can also get flour from the mill, your carpenter can get wood from the woodcutter.
2. for trade
3. to actually store something. Production buildings can store 50 units each, a warehouse/granary can store 400.
4. to transport resources over the map. Your farm is down by the river but your mill is up on the mountain? Then you'd rather have a storekeeper bring the grain to a warehouse/granary on the mountain than your miller wasting his time on the road.
