If necessary, they change the setups to suit their driving behavior.
For example, I ride the stage the first time through.
Then I change the setup and compare the times from the first section, because that way I don't have to ride the whole stage.
Changing the gear ratio also brings some times, you have to test that.

also you need to use manual gearbox. automatic, isnt enough, or at least it would be way harder. for example, look at how in certain parts i drive quite a while in a specific gear, with automatic gearbox it would make ur car more unstable and lose more time. also i got a time of 6:53.983, and my previous best used to be 7:10 just like you
