Virtual Desktop + Quest 3 VR Headset (Newbie Question)
Apologises and maybe I am just dumb but I am trying to get Dirt Rally 2.0 running in VR on my Quest 3. I have Virtual Desktop loaded on my Quest 3. I have Virtual Desktop Streamer on my Windows 11 PC. I am able to play the game through the headset, everything is smooth and looking good but I am in a virtual environment and viewing the game on a virtual monitor. How do I get it so I am actually sitting in the car and I can control the camera with head movement? Via research, I don't have Oculus Air Link installed because people say Virtual Desktop is superior.

Spent another few hours on this, cannot figure it out. I understand that SteamVR and Oculus modes are different? Anyway, I have now downloaded SteamVR via Steam. I load the game in SteamVR mode, I press Shift + Windows Key + D to change to VR Mode. I now see Dirt Rally in my headset and I have head tracking. The menu screen looks like crap, the text is aliased and resolution is low. I go to settings, there is no resolution option but I turn every graphical setting to maximum. In my SteamVR settings I have everythijng maxed out including resolution per eye. In my Virtual Desktop app, I have everything maxed out and set to 120 hz. When I am in the car, everything looks like crap. It looks like Playstation 2 graphics. If I switch out of VR mode, I see a SteamVR overlay below my vision. It says graphics are on Godlike @ 90hz. Can someone please help?

OK managed to get everything looking big in my headset, head tracking all works. Problem is, I can see my whole room through the graphics!! The game is running overlaid over my room... help!

I've managed to figure it out. Not sure if I am running this on Oculus or Virtual Desktop as I had both apps running in the background but it definitely is using SteamVR. I had to recreate the boundaries in the headset (that's why I could see my room through the game). I have the game on max settings and it looks absolutely incredible.

Question, how do I use it via Virtual Desktop and without SteamVR? As I heard it performs better.

I never got DR2 to work with SteamVR (have it turned off). I just start the Oculus software first, minimize it and then fire up DR2 in Oculus mode. Works fine, but then I have the old Rift. (I had a blast on wet stages in Oz- & Kiwiland tonight - I still wear a big smile on my face 😁).

I hope you get it to work with your more modern goggles! Hopefully someone with a Quest 3 turns up with good input.

When I launch Dirt 2 it asks me if I want Oculus mode or SteamVR mode. I believe you can add launch parameters if it isn't working properly.

Thanks both. After the next few days of work I will try and get this working in Oculus mode!

You need to get this working, such a difference between DR2 and pancake & VR. Let us know how things're going.

As I said, I did get it working in SteamVR. Does going to Oculus mode instead of SteamVR make a big difference?

You need to run the virtual desktop app from the quest. You can buy that from the quest/meta store. The desktop streamer is needed in order to connect the headset and the computer. Then you must start Virtual Desktop via the Apps menu in the quest, from there connect to your computer and start SteamVR.

I've done this a few days ago and it's an improvement compared to airlink. Games do work on airlink, but i got occasional hickups and the image was soft. Virtual desktop fixed all of that.

If you want to run the game without virtual desktop, you can try to opt-in on for the beta versions of the oculus app and steamvr, you can find the options in the settings of both apps. I did that before i bought the virtual desktop app and was able to run games by starting SteamVR and starting the game from there.

Yes I said in my original post that I have Virtual Desktop on my Quest 3. I managed to get it running via SteamVR with the Virtual Desktop streamer. I am going to play around and see if I can run it without SteamVR (I don't use Airlink and won't consider it). I want to try Oculus mode.

The game will be in a virtual environment while in the menu.
Once you start a race and get into your car, true VR kicks in.

If you want to try Oculus mode, pretty sure you will have to use air link or link cable.

Did you get it working without SteamVR? I swear it was working without SteamVR when I would launch it from the Virtual Desktop games screen. Then I happened to launch it one time through Steam. Now it starts SteamVR every time and sets the active runtime to SteamVR no matter what I try. Performance still seems ok, but I'd rather not run SteamVR if it's not necessary. I'm wondering if it was working before because I had never launched through Steam after installing.

I haven't played Dirt Rally in a while so I don't remember. I believe I've only run it via SteamVR in the end

just hook your quest to PC via link cable and run it in oculus mode. Easy peezy.

Wireless VR is crap. I don't understand all the hype around it. The added latency and compression are very noticeable

With a Wifi6 router that's independent from other traffic, the wireless speed for me has no latency, it's extremely fast

Maybe i have my router set up wrong. Its not wifi6 but it has both 2g and 5g bans. I have it next to my PC with a cable connecting router and PC. The Quest was the only device on the 5g and it was still pretty bad compared to link. Something must be wrong with my setup
