10gb update takes up 50gb when being downloaded/installed?
So, next time there's a patch i better have 50+ gb of free space for a 10gb update.. Nice.

Yep, and that's for every update, even if it's only frigging 200mb.

Or you could ask why the updates need more drive space that the updates size... and always has done...

Because it moves -all- game files to the steam\download folder.
Why?It's codemasters magic!

This is not the only game that updates like this, the Total War games do the same, some odd updating method.
Axe 16 kwietnia 2019 o 9:46
Steam downloads compressed files, decompresses them and then deletes the compressed files. There is absolutely nothing strange or odd about it.

When the next patch arrives monitor your \Steam\SteamApps\downloading\690790 folder and you'll see, that it moves all gamefiles into it.
And even when, then would be a 5:1 compression ratio outstanding, considering that most of the textures and audio files are already compressed.

I think I have missed something (genuinely)

I didn't and wasn't denying any file movement.

Ah. That was what you was calling odd(?)

Yes some files are compressed already indeed.

And i never had a game on steam that wanted to download a 10gig patch and stopped because of insufficient disk space, despite having 50gig free.

I understand the 'odd' bit now :steamhappy:

if you have a notebook with 256GB SSD you have to uninstall all other games to update Dirt Rally 2!

I will uninstall Dirt Rally 2 soon..

pretty standard for modern games to be compressed inside a shell .exe that needs unpacking yes it does mean you have to have reserve space. A reason why my single player games are still on spinning rust.

To be honest the patch today was the straw that broke the camels back in my case. First I saw the patch notes and thought the changes aren´t enough to come back to the game. And then the patching......now of course I knew that the patch-process needed more space than the initial patch-size; due to the experience from the last patches. I had 45 Gigs free on that specific SSD, and for the last patches that was enough. But today, at 86% it said: "Not enough Disc-Space". That was the moment I said to myself: That´s it....... Uninstall this mess of a game and maybe look how (or IF) the game has improved in a couple of months from now.

Patch 1.2 was 4 weeks ago, Patch 1.2.1 more than 3 weeks. I´m sorry, but I expected more after this amount of time. And then some things STILL aren´t fixed yet (the Audio-bug for example). The game is out for nearly 2 months now, and to be honest I was expecting Codemasters would begin to IMPROVE the game at this point, and not still work on the stuff that should have been functional at release. If this timeframe goes on (1 Patch every 3-4 weeks) I can see the game needing at minimum another 6 months to just be in the state the game should have been released in.

Damn, DR2.0 has become my personal biggest disappointment of recent times. Thing is, the driving can be fun (when the Audio works, Racenet doesn´t have its usual hiccups for example), but too much around that is just annoyingly lacklustre.

I only play SP-Games; and I personally don´t remember THAT many games that needed the size of the whole game as free space to download some patches. Of course you need the free space similar to the size of the patch, or maybe a little bit more. But the size of the whole game ? I don´t remember Dirt Rally doing its patching in this way.

Well said darksoul and unfortunatly i dont think you would be alone in that assesment mate.
Axe 16 kwietnia 2019 o 19:26
As a single player only too, I've long wished there could be a separate SP download only at a certain cost with the option to add the MP portion (to be paid for as an extra) if I decided to try it :-/
