try to stick to the road. Much safer on the track than off it.
Did you use "hard" tyres? I have yet to burst a tyre by driving and drifting alone.
Also, don't forget to change out badly-worn ones between stages. Persistant wear is a thing, now.
Do real life rally drivers have their damage turned off so they can blast through the forests and such like it's nothing?
Think about it. Learn from mistakes and try to get better.
In that case I would humbly argue the damage was done before going out onto the stage...

@op: try feathering the throttle a little more, even through slides. It might just end up saving you enough tyre-thread to last you for the stage you're on.
Also: drifting is like ice-skating: hitting the wall or tumbling over adds drama, but yields less points for grace.
