2 - Dont know how it is configured by default (or how you are used to at other games) but dont use throttle and brake along with steering on the same hand (split brake/throttle/gearing/handbrake to 1 hand, steering for the other).
I played DR1 for a time at keyboard alone (and I was used to play racing games with this configuration). Try this:
A - turn left
D - turn right
K - throttle
J - brake
L - handbrake
O - downshift
U - upshift
I - change camera
N - ESC (PAUSE)
And try to be "gentle" with your inputs, also just because it is rally dont mean you have to use handbrake all the time.
You're welcome...
Oh well... same same old same old...
For turning less, tap slowly.
For turning in-between little and full lock, fast tap.
Fur fast full turn, just hold the steering.
Use the same logic for braking and throttle, whenever you need less brake, use fast tap or slow tap, whenever you need less throttle, use fast tap or slow tap.
If you change linearity to be smoother with more gradual input for whenever you hold the keys down, then whenever you need to react faster you will not be able to, so that is no in-between other than learning to fast tap and slow tap (and even learning in-between fast tap, very fast tap, very slow tapping, slow tap and average tapping).
No problem but as you'll see I don't put much much credence into the KB settings. They are mostly irrelevant to me.

I couldn't have put it better. OP.
Many have posted that playing with KB is easy and requires no 'talent/practicing' and I always ask them why don't they do it then. It certainly isn't especially the best method for competition but it does require an accumulation of different of skills.
It may just be a matter of practice and honing your muscle memory.
Edit: Also Dirt4 is out and out arcade not at all like DR 2.0
I have an Xbox 360 controller, but I use the tapping method with d-pad because the analog stick is impossible to micromanage high speed steering with. Analog control is total ♥♥♥♥ because the range isn't enough; you always steer too much or not enough, and when you're going fast, one accidental full push of the stick in either direction, and you're flying off the track into outer space because your rear will start sliding. When you d-pad tap, one input won't destroy you (with about 80 sensitivity), and it's also easier to control overall.
I'd rather use keyboard even. Tapping allows for quite precise steering, though still not nearly as precise as wheel. My times improved a lot instantly when I stopped using analog.

Go with fast tapping, or slow/average tapping, for what you need, everything else is memorization of car handling on each surface and how you deal with tapping for each.
Yeah, that's how I play DR2 with a controller d-pad too. It looks janky as f*ck, but it works surprisingly well. The precision at fast speeds is pretty good, such as at 0:55 in my video.
