Analog handbrake worth it for this game?
Anyone got an analog handbrake and can share how well it works? I'm using my shifter with a rubber band as a "digital handbrake" right now. Protip btw if you're on a budget and using cars with sequential shifters. I want to get a handbrake but I'm interested in knowing how useful the analog functionality actually is. I'm thinking you either lock the rear wheels and slide or you don't. Is there any benefit in say, a half input handbrake, or a gradual brake-to-lock handbrake turn?

I would be suprprised if this game even handles analog handbrake well though... Seems like too much of a niche. I also play RBR and WRC8 (ugh) sometimes so I'm wondering how it is for those games too.

Also off topic but does anyone know if they've made any changes to the tarmac physics or FFB? I did a stage in Monte Carlo with R5 yesterday and it felt really grippy and good none of that sliding bs I remembered. I used winter tyres.

Anyone wanna chime in?

Depends on the games "physics"

With Assetto corsa, you can make certain powerful cars more driveable like the Ruf,
I used a rotary dial, with minor input and under full acceleration the car didn`t snake.

Also had no brake fade, in acc i never tried and probably won't.

I don`t use a analog handbrake, i use a digital button on the wheel,

1) quicker to use
2) both hands on the wheel

Love driving the 4wd cars, 20% diff front and max/2notches from max on the rear diff.
Depending on what car and what track.

on this game i would use digital than analog.

Anyhoo i`m not a rally driver, so take this with a pinch of salt.

I've got a fanatec analogue hand brake, and can say I haven't noticed a difference between analogue and having a digital button (I only ever tap or hold the stick for a sec at a time anyway, I either want lock or I don't, the in between bits don't make sense to me, I honestly have no idea who analogue is for, it has to be for someone otherwise it wouldn't be a thing) apart from immersion and it being 100 years better for when your actually drifting and your steering wheel is upside down, inside out, out the wazoo. Also it just feels good to pull you know. Yes Dirt Rally 2.0 has analogue handbrake support, it was added late last year at the demand of the community.

Actually I have an idea as to why basically all gaming hand brakes are analogue, maybe it is so that as soon as you start pulling on the stick input is registered, instead of waiting for the digital input. If the handbrake was digital you probably wouldn't want much travel otherwise it would take to long to pull the handbrake defeating the purpose. I suppose analogue handbrake support is desired so that sims can take advantage of the fact that the handbrake just so happens to operate off of an axis and not a digital switch. I could also see analogue being useful for half locking the wheels for slight mid drift/slide angle corrections.

In Dirt Rally 1 I had to modify a file to get true full analog out of my Fanatec. Don't let the calibration screen fool you, there may be little analog action in the game. Don't know if that would be needed with this game. Try testing in low gear with a small amount of throttle, slowly add handbrake to see how it responds.

The advantage was best seen in some of the turns in Rally X. It takes some practice and skill, coming into the turn hot and heavy, first pulling for full lock then releasing to threshold into the apex and further if needed.

At full lock you have the rear loosing full traction and able to pitch the car sideways. At threshold you still have the rear wheels sliding yet able to slowly rotate keeping the speed lost at a minimum and quicker response when back on the throttle. Also better control of your slide to place the car exactly where you want it by adding or releasing pressure.

Once you get hang of it, you find yourself entering the turn at a faster rate of speed and back on full throttle earlier. Compared to a button, you have more room for correction with analog if error in timing.

Thanks those are some good cases for analog. I'm still unsure if I can believe it's possible to slide the rear wheels with hand brake without locking them. If the friction caused by the brakes is higher than the friciton of the the gravel, it will slide, otherwise not. I think... Path of least resistance and all that... But sometimes you slide sideways while the weels are still spinning. And if you're braking the rear wheels just a bit, then the front wheels will be spinning faster than the rear, depending on the differential, and... uh I give up... physics is hard. And also this is a game not real life. I think analog is worth it if only for quicker response. The rest of the stuff I'm better off figuring out in practice.

Denkis, you want the rear wheels to lock up, to do handbreak turns. (only tap the handbreak when you start your turn (digital)

The rear slides, also locking the rear diff`s causes both wheels to turn at the same speed.
when applying the power.

So one wheel should lose traction on one side when turning. if the diff is overdoing it causing the car to overstear too much for you to handle, just knock the rear diff down a couple of notches.

(Couple of nights ago, i`ve managed to dial my FFB wheel, what a difference in the driving aspect.)

Anyhoo, good luck and remember practice practice and practice.

Immersion. It won't make you faster but sure is a lot more enjoyable pulling a hand brake rather then pressing a button plus it's easier to get to. I found it difficult using a button on the wheel. I have a TH8A shifter that i have been using as an analogue handbrake.

youre a weird man. Lol

but anyway, while some handbrake (aka less rear acceleration... which is essentially just throttle control) in some cars like the RUF in AC can help, you hurt your acceleration, and its not really immersive or realistic :P
