Repairing vehicles

So I'm a bit confused, I chose automatic repairs and so the option to repair them myself right before the stage is not available as expected. But then between events it lets me repair the car and no matter what I choose it's free? Are these two repair options supposed to be different or the same? And why is it free to fix and/or replace any parts I want?

Also, repairing the car has nothing to do with the tires, these have to be replaced manually (which took me by surprise when I started next stage with a nice shiny car but still no front right tire ;)

It was a bit of a nuisance in DR1 to repair the cars, since 99% of the time I would use recommended repairs anyway, so it was just wasting time. I was happy to see automatic repairs option, but tires don't get replaced, so there's still some extra work you have to remember about before starting each new stage.

The repairs are only free for your starter car (don´t know if that is Lancia Fulvia for eveyone, at least it is for me).
