VR mode never kicks on, always in theatre mode. Anyone know a fix?
The game just never enters actual VR mode.

Can you actually see the Steam VR theatre scene?

The reason I ask is that the game doesn't actually run in true VR all the time. it only switches to true VR when your car is at the start line. Everything else runs in theatre mode.

However, if you can actually see the steam vr theatre i.e. the 3d cinema space then you need to untick the "Use Theatre Mode" check box for the game.

Yes it starts in theatre mode and just never leaves theatre mode, I can even race on the cinema screen.

Do you mean turn off 'Use desktop game theatre when steamVR is active', in properties?

I will test that, thanks.

Yes, that's the one :) You could also check the config file to make sure VR is enabled...

Edit this file in notepad/notepad++

Documents\My games\DiRT Rally 2.0\hardwaresettings\hardware_settings_config.xml

look towards the bottom of the file and make sure the line (line 62 for me) has VR enabled e.g. <vr enabled="true" eyeDistanceMultiplier="1.000000" lockedOrientation="false">
not
<vr enabled="false" eyeDistanceMultiplier="1.000000" lockedOrientation="false">

Hope that helps :)

When I turn off theatre mode steam just says "this game does not support VR" but if I enable VR in the config it enters a very rudimentary theatre mode. Is that how it's supposed to be?

Are these instructions included anywhere in the game? Am I being blind? I've never played a game before that requires a config file change to activate an advertised feature.

Cheers for your help!

You shouldn't need to change any config files. Which VR headset are you using? You can try to set -VR as a launch option for the game by right clicking it in the library and choosing "properties" and then "set launch options".

I am using a Vive, and yes everything is set up correctly. I do VR game dev on the same system I'm trying to play DR2 VR on.

It seems like somehow the game is being installed as a non-VR game, and isn't detecting SteamVR. When you launch is it supposed to prompt VR / non-VR?

The only issue I can think of is that my Vive was not plugged in during install and first launch. I hope that isn't how CM are handling initial config.

My game is not in the VR category in my steam library. I get no prompt whatsoever, if my oculus is plugged in it automatically launches into VR. Sometimes I get a message saying the game doesn't support VR but when I click ok it launches into VR.
I've heard some people having problems with SteamVR Beta version. I personally haven't had this problem but if you're using SteamVR beta you should try the non beta version.

Damn, well hopefully CM do some more robust testing because for me the entire game just acted like a non-VR game until I edited the config.

I tried both the beta and non beta branches of SteamVR and neither prompted the game into VR mode.

Yes that is correct. Steam will say it is a non-VR game but just ignore that.

All the menu screens and even the start of the rally is in a very basic theatre mode.

It will switch to full VR after a short delay once your car is on the start line i.e. it will show the interior of your car in theatre mode briefly before switching to VR

Weird but it does work - eventually! :)

If I try running the game with SteamVR already running it just closes. I did get it asking me for theater mode before too.

To actually launch properly I do this:
SteamVR off
Launch Dirt 2
dirt Launches, SteamVR launches (Dirt is launching it it seems) which tabs out of the game (very annoying). Tab back in and all set.

Do note that you don't go into VR mode true until you are actually about to start the race.
