Why is this game so much harder than Dirt 4?
It honestly is. Looks like im gonna have to stick the AI difficulty to easy, if i wanna stand a decent chance of not trailing miles behind the other cars in the rally cross sections, and be able to place in the top 10 of the Rally courses on each course. On Dirt 4, i was able to turn the difficulty quite high and still place in the top 5 on each rally course.

Also i think the cars were better for handling in dirt 4 (provided the cars you used were cars you bought, and not cars that were given to you if you didnt have a car in your garage). I usually placed 2nd or 1st in the Sweden (snow) stages. In Dirt Rally 2.0, alot of the time the cars behave and handle like your driving on grease or something. One little sneeze and your car flips and rolls for ages.

I think because DIRT Rally 2.o is a direct sequel of DIRT Rally , DIRT 4 its continue when DIRT 3 left ... I thinks for that reason DIRT 4 its more easy ... but its my opinion

If by better handling you mean that physics were nonexistent and cars were glued to the tracks then *better* is highly subjective.

dirt 4 was an arcade game ...not a rally simulation

This, exactly. Dirt series are arcade games, Dirt Rally series are sims.

Dirt 4 is an arcade style game, so the cars are easy to handle. Dirt Rally 2.0 is a simracer (or some people might call it "simcade") game so physics are way more realistic and it's not just about breaking to the right speed to take corners perfectly.
If you want to have it a bit easier I recommend looking in the game settings for the assistants options. If you turn a couple of them on you'll probably have an easier time if more arcade style gameplay is what you like.

I did not get the impression that Dirt 4 was an arcade game (not when you compare it to games like Pure, Onrush or sega rally championships), cause you still have to break much for taking grade 2 turns, and there is still drifting and counter steering to have to master. But i did get the impression that Dirt 4 was somewhat watered down compared to Dirt Rally.

For example the stewards were more relaxed on corner cutting in the rally cross parts. It wasnt as easy for you to smash all your front lights, forcing you to do night time courses in the pitch black. In Dirt Rally, it was quite difficult aswell to avoid getting disqualified on the french monte cristo course.

Dirt 4 was more fun aswell. A cool soundtrack, , bonus's for getting 4 fastest splits or getting less than 15 seconds worth of penalties ect, and the fact you could create your own team and have to negotiate with the higher grade engineers, as they wanted a bigger cut when you offered them a contract.

Looks like im gonna have to turn the AI difficulty down tho, if im gonna do decently well. I want a driving game where i have to really work hard and have full concentration, and have my best foot foward, if i wanna get first or second place. Not where i have to do all that just to get above 20th position.

Yes, you might have to do that. Difficulty in Dirt 4 is laughable and I always ended up 20-30 minutes ahead of the AI, which was quite boring. But all the other aspects you mentioned made it fun. Dirt 5 (hopefully) might be more of that.

In terms of driving it's just DR2 is designed to be a different games with different skill requirements. Fun is subjective, I like the toughness and 'realism' of DR but I also like the simplicity and ease of car control in some other games.

Beating AI and coming in top positions is a different and somewhat unrelated thing. It could well be that the AI is harder, it could be that you are just better at driving in D4. I'm generally just amazed if I do better than 'really bad'.

Dirt 4 has this utterly bizarre ultra-grip where cars behave like they are on rails. That is absolutely not how a real car behaves, especially not on loose surfaces which in Dirt 4 were not loose at all. Basic driving techniques like weight transfers and throttle oversteer were completely broken in DR4 since the cars did not react to driver inputs anything at all like a real car. DR2 does a far better job at simulating actually driving a car. Which is also more difficult, because rally driving is difficult.

U can't adjust difficulty in career, if u place in top 3 in season points u will be promoted to higher level and AI becomes faster (levels: beginner 4stages per event , clubman 6 stages per event, professional 8 stages per event, elite 10stages per event, masters 12 stages per event).

If that higher level is too difficult u need to abandon that season to drop a level down or u can drop when placing in lowest 3 in season points. It could be difficult if car is missing upgrades so maybe continue to drive to unlock engine tunings and purchase them to see if level becomes easier.

For now avoid using H2 fwd, R2 and maybe Gr B 4wd + Gr B rwd cars in career because ai difficulty can be too hard even on clubman/professional levels with fully upgraded car.

H3 rwd and R5 class AI times should be better balanced. Maybe drive career with H1 fwd Mini or Fulvia(free repairs on Fulvia) until u can afford a H3 car(get BMW or Stratos) and then do H3 career until u can afford R5 car, have 200-300k or more credit over after purchase so u have money for repairs and upgrades. Also do daily, weekly events with cars u got to make money.

U can have hardcore damage on in career but don't put it on if u crash a lot and more modern cars can get very expensive to repair.

To win or place in top3 on elite/masters levels u need best car in the class with max engine tunings on it and very good stage knowledge.

Because it's a simulator, rather than zero understeer in RWD classes with ultra grip crap like DiRT4

Because Dirt 4 is an arcade game with some sim concepts poorly implemented, Dirt Rally 2.0 is a sim and demand more control over throttle, breaks and steering, also more concern later on with car setups.
Physics is also much more realistic and better implemented, what affects everything you do on the track, for good or for bad.

On the part in freeplay, where its "FIA world rallycross championship" I turned the AI difficulty down to 34, and i still didnt do very well, i only just on the skin of my teeth came 4th.

It just seems to me that inless i turn the AI considerably down, all the computer controlled cars drive like superman compared to me. I cant do any of the daily, weekly or monthly challanges, because i dont have the cars or locations it requires, plus i dont have an online subscription anyway.

Practice at Time Trial.

The harder the AI the closer AI times will be to world record so if you want to beat the AI at higher difficulties you need to get better with both car and track.

You only have yourself to blame in that department.

Practice makes perfect.
