How legit are the leaderboards?

I find it interesting after finish a, what I think, a good run at a stage and then comparing it to the leaderboards. My best times are around top 100, or so, but many times a lot worse. Meanwhile the leaders are waaaay ahead.

Now, I’m pretty new to this game and just got into sim racing/rallying (except for abusing RBR way back in ancient history). So anyway, I know I’m slow - of course. But seeing some leaderboard times got me curious.

Are these times really legit? I know there are some serious drivers out there but some of the times beggars belief.

In some videos I’ve seen of world records it also seems to me the runs are impossibly clean. Like one I watched recently of a guy pretty much just flooring it and barely turning the wheel to get around, while driving completely clean at insane speed.

So, what’s up? Are people cheating the leaderboards, or using exploits in the tuning or are they just simply unbelievably good?

In case of cheats and or exploits, do you know of any good drivers that don’t use them? Would be nice to have something to compare my own times to.

As we have no workshop in DR2.0, that would be great to open a thread in the guide section where "masters" would accept to share their car setups. I know it is a lot of work , but that would definitely waive many frustrations from DR 2.0 community struggling with their car setups.

So far I tried many setups from GTR technical which are really good on you tube.

Yesterday I spent hours on the delta S4 in spain to prevent that damn car loosing grip unexpectedly and going into spin. I even dared to apply some assist and followed 2 or 3 of top lead ghosts ... I still have no clue how they can manage to keep the speed and grip....I ended 15-20 seconds behind...this is huge. Do they use traction and ABS assist?

Agreed 100%. The point is; not everyone TRY to remain honest when nobody sees them. If they sniff at a tiny chance to deceive other people, they tend to forget rules of competition. Thank God there are many gamers like you who place the VALUE of competition above themselves.

man, this times are cheated AF. I'm surely not the fastest driver, but constantly 1 min. behind is impossible to explain...and i'm sim-racing since decade(s).

With a slow car where you can't do much wrong, allready loosing 8 sec. into the first gap...impossible.

Interestingly, I always assumed the same until I started practicing yesterday on Australia's Mount Faye and I'm now 6th globally. I'm using a G27 and my Oculus Rift.

I could only hit 16th position in the Aston Martin and saw others using the BMW M2 car, so switched it up to see the difference. Instantly dropped seconds off my time and into 6th place.

I don't know how to use mods, and I don't tune the cars at all. I just love driving and learn the physics of a car.

Yeah I see this Catty7073 guy always seems to be at the top on almost every daily. 2nd place is 20 seconds behind with 10th being like 8 seconds later. It doesn't add up at all. I'd love to see this guys game play in real time. If he's that good and plays every day in dailys why didn't he place in last years championship? Yes I think he cheats.

I can see how the best times can make you feel like not even trying to beat them, but I see it like this.
If an experienced sim racer decides to make it their goal to be first, it becomes very possible, with car setups and track knowledge over time, it's just like doing 1 lap of a slightly longer track, mastering each turn and zeroing the car setup is standard procedures for any elite sim race competitor, with this game you can infinite restart, challenge the fastest ghosts and it's only one lap if you think about it, much easier than accounting for tyre wear, strategy, pitstops, track sharing and racing for over an hour in circuit racing events.
But admittedly you do need to be a very fast racer with setup knowledge.

These guys with 0001 of each other are likely club members who are sharing the same setup and the times are probably there from an event they did.
Just takes people with the skill and the time to put in, i would say its very possible and they are real times.

No, it dont need "cheats" to be good, they just know exactly what they are doing, they are smooth (or as smooth as possible) and also they probably change something to setup to make the car better for their driving skills and style.

It is skills, time and commitment, not cheats or hacks.
They are "unbelievably good" yes and the more you improve with your skills, the more you see their times are doable and the more "believable" their driving become as you start to understand what and how they did.

I am not the one crying, also I dont have any time at the top of leaderboards or anything alike.
You sent screenshot of DR 1 while you said at DR 2.0 it is all over the place.
If it really was "all over the place" like you mentioned, you could easily get 1 screenshot of any leaderboard.
As there are a lot of leaderboards at DR 2.0, it is really hard to check all, one by one, still, from all leaderboards I checked so far, I could not find any cheated times like you claim.
Also, if I was a "cheater trying to justify" I wouldnt request screenshots of said cheated times, I would just shut up and hide, still, you seem to be one trying to just say it is all over the place (when in fact it is not).

I dont know about events, I literally have not done any "online event" so far and I also dont really care about playing career mode either, I just do some time trials from time to time and that is it.
Still, as you said it is so often, at least show us one.

Well, if it's not there anymore, then well done Codemasters, finally moderating the leaderboards. DR1 had basically no moderating, and just one reset during the whole lifetime of the game. In DR2.0, there was little to no moderation when it launched. I haven't been doing TTs in a while now, so i have no clue about the current situation.

And how can you talk about the online events if you don't even play them? The cheating is much more common there, as those leaderboards won't stay up more than the time the event is running. And There is usually at least one cheated time. That really demotivated the daily/weekly/etc events for me. Especially when you can just Alt+F4 if you f up, and you can try again, while you normally should NOT be able to do that.
