For all cores:
1. GO SLOW. The easiest and fastest way to lose is to move too much. Stand still and do a quick 360 after every kill to see where the enemies are, then plan your attack.
2. When you do have to move, always jump and hold down the spacebar. This is a great way to move as it gives you great control without speeding up the action too much.
3. If you are down 1 (or 2) hearts and a boss shows up, only attack the boss. Killing the boss is an instant heal.
4. If you are NOT down any hearts and a boss shows up, avoid the boss and attack the regulars.
5. This one is obvious, but pick hacks that synergize with not only your core but also your other hacks. Sometimes you don't get hacks that aren't specific for your core. That's fine. If you (for example) start down a gun-centric build for Ninja, it's okay to build on the guns and use recall in rare conditions.
For CLIENT (endurance): Gunner builds (quickshot, ricochet, rndgun) work great as do Zerker builds (berzerk, rndmle, telstreak, wpnmstr)
For ADDICT (hotswitch): Hotswitch is a great get-out-of-eating-a-bullet-free card. It's also great for taking out mushroom. ADDICT is my go-to core for harder levels. Outside of hotswitch, I play ADDICT and CLIENT about the same. Grab "perfswitch" and "ultraswitch" for god mode.
For NINJA (recall): Obviously, taking advantage of the katana (one of the best weapons in the game) is what you are going for. Don't be afraid to throw the katana a lot. Ignore the NINJA-specific hack "piercing". Grab "flwrecall", "berzerk", and "wpnmstr" if you can . Take "hidshurkn" for a backup if you have to throw your katana between recall cooldowns. Don't try to get fancy with killing guys on recalls unless it is super safe. Just get the katana back in your hand.
For DOG (charge): Cooldown on charge is short, so use it liberally. Remember you can use charge to get away from an exploding mushroom guy as easily as it can bring you to one. Here, use "fastmove", "berzerk", "rndmle", "ironfst" and "chaincrg". Don't bother with "lethalcharge".
CRAP HACKS THAT YOU SHOULDN'T TAKE: +bullets (unless the other option is worse), defbul (you get hit more often than you deflect them), piercing (too situational), lethalcharge (easier to kill them), strongp (saves ONE punch. Whoopie), strngthrows (not very powerful), +1HP (it was buggy before. If fixed, this might be worth a go)

Especially the ones covered in spikes. They give the best hugs.

I disagree on StrongerPunch. It doesn't just hit harder, it lets you deflect projectiles and hit concrete enemies anywhere to deal damage to them. And along with Charge, which passively increases your melee damage, enemies become one hit KOs. I'd argue that it's vital to a charge build, especially if you're trying to go fists only.
