Lee Hong Assassination safe bug

I've encountered a strange bug in the Lee Hong Assassination level when playing on medium and hard difficulties: after getting the safe combination from the girl and freeing the captured agent, he tells me the location of the safe where the jade figurine is, but when I get there and try to open it the game tells me it's locked and the alarm goes off, blowing my cover.

This has happened every time I've tried the level on medium and hard, no matter the location of the safe (can spawn at three different locations), but the strangest thing is that this didn't happen when playing on easy, the agent pointed me to the correct safe and I was able to beat the level several times no problem, but on higher difficulties it's bugged for me. Any idea where the problem might be?

I can't say exactly what happens... the game is old and has several bugs. I have played that mission on hard and had no problems. Only once, because I got the wrong safe.

I still have my old original PC DVD(ROM) copy (over 20 years old) in fair shape and I have never encountered the bug, I bought the digital copy just in case something happened to it. Thank you for listing the bug, it could be a corrupted file and you could replace some of the files from a file archive site make sure to do a background check on sites before downloading things on the game that is linked to the physical version, or just verify your game file. I bought the game when I was in grade school, this shows how much this generation takes care of things. There could be an unofficial patch been ages since I checked.

It could be a bug specific to the Steam version

Steam version of SA is patched to remove some iconography that certain groups complained about, but had the result of breaking some things. Such as the poisoned fugu never being picked up by a waitress in one mission, no matter how long you wait
