Problem starting up steam
So I played this game the other day and played it for a bit. Worked well but today I tried going on it but I got an error saying 'Problem starting up steam'. Any help?

Same here; there was a Steam update, and now it doesn't work anymore.
Tried restarting steam, launching in Admin mode, launching from a desktop shortcut, verifying the cache - no dice.

Same problem here. And did you mean that gamecopyworld solution? Amazing that site still online, lol.

Edit:
Works for me, thanks for the pro tip. At first I got a crash message when I tried to click the .exe file, then I run the game from steam client, game started again.
'Don't forget to make a backup before you overwrite the original .exe file.' ;)

Is there a solution to this that doesn't include using files from that site? I've tried different compatability modes, starting steam in admin mode, installing the game using steam in admin mode and nothing seems to work.

This game worked perfectly on the same computer a year or so ago, so they must have changed something....

EDIT: The steam.dll fix doesn't work either.

The above "crack" solved the issue for me. Scanned it with ESET Nod32, found nothing harmful whatsoever in it.

Would be nice if Steam would fix what they broke with that recent update though - relying on a patch from a cracked version to make an official install work is not really ok <.<

Not that I'm aware of. I tried all of the things you tired. The game worked just fine for me a few days ago, then I suddenly started getting this error. I'd also prefer not to use the fix above, but it's working and, essentially, I'm happy to be playing a game that I paid for.

As an aside, I'm playing in first person and really digging it. However, the most recent patch (1.2) has a bug where the brightness is ridiculous in 1st person when using certain items. So I'm actually using the 1.0 version to solve this issue. Can't find 1.1 anywhere.

Ultimately, my point is that these are issues that have been around since the game was released in 2006. That was 8 years ago. I don't know about you, but I'm not holding my breath. The fix above works, and at the end of the day, I just want to play the game I paid for.

Good luck to you! And if you find another solution, let us know.

Well cheers for the help everbody but I think I might just leave the game as it is because I don't really like modding games because I feel like I will break something. Thanks again, hope this gets fixed in a patch but I do doubt it

Steam Beta just updated with a fix to the problem!
The patch notes mentioned fixing a regression problem that caused older games to not start.

You can launch it normally now!

Have fun folks!

This did not work for me. Reverting to the previous exe (the one originally downloaded from steam) continues to give me the error and the game cannot start. I wonder if a reinstall would fix the issue. Since I have the game working, it's not worth the effort to find out. Hope the latest steam update fixed it for everyone!

Run Steam in Administration Mode...

It works normally now. I'm guessing Steam fixed it

For those who - like me - still encounter the error despite the new update, make sure you remove the Steam.dll file you might have put in the Hitman folder to solve the "Cannot find Steam" error.

The new update fixes both the "Problem starting up Steam" AND the "Cannot find Steam" errors, BUT provided you don't keep that Steam.dll file in your Hitman folder.
