Are money important?

Is the amount of money spent on a level meaningful in any way? Like, there's any kind of reward for spending less money?

Not that I've seen. The real reward is probably trying to do the level for less.

Actually cutting costs to improve the bridge is the most interesting part of the game, because just completing a level is not challenging enough, anybody can finish a level with 300k budget, but putting some levels under a certain amount of money is a mindtwist. :)

You have the budget of Cave Johnson behind you, and as we know, his budget is just to throw money at the problem till it goes away.

There IS a cap but it's really high. I found out on one level when I passed it and I couldn't build any more. I had to take out some pieces here and there to finish my build. I had spent over $500,500. I think that's the cap.
