Here's the exact wording provided to me by the developers, People Can Fly, in their review guide:
"The Trial of Tarya Gratar works a little bit differently from the rest of the game - it's balanced for three players and doesn't scale down for single players or duos in quite the same way the campaign does, and is not intended to be soloable at the highest apocalypse tiers.
It scales like the rest of the game and can be solo'ed like expeditions.
