Game Merit

[Phallus Maximus 69]

After you finish a mission there a screen with some stats like how many enemies you killed and how many vehicles and structures you destroy. What counts for merit in this game is time of completion and damage sustained by your team.

So you have 3 silver stars for sustaining damage and 3 silver stars for mission time which equals 3 gold stars and that's the maximum amount of merit per mission, thus "Mission Merit". You need 6 gold stars to get promoted, and the "Merit" is like an experience bar and, when maxed it goes to the next level - the promotion. You need all 120 silver stars which equal 60 gold stars to get the maximum rank of Field Marshall. You need 30 gold stars to access the secret mission (that's the 20th mission, though in some versions of the game there's no merit requirement). However, you can basically abuse the system for merit by retrying missions, from the end screen, so Field Marshall is attainable by retrying the missions over and over.

Alright, I'll assume so and restart my run then :P I'm late in the game and got no chance to reach high enough merit atm (Slow player).
