The game had amaizing character creation that you can change at any point of the game. and the fact that you can switch your build with just selecting a different class in the menu kept the game fresh through the playthrough.
Enemy moves and situations are designed with you having a npc follower in mind. If want to play solo then it can be a bit tidious. But as someone who never uses phantoms it was a new experience for me and I was pleasantly surprised.
I liked the characters but didn't find the story too interesting. Some of the backstories are cool and I really liked them but they are told in an akward way.
Over all above average experience 6.5/10
You could play much worse souls likes. If you have game then play it already.
It's on the easier side of souls-like, but I love the story, graphics, and the combat. Easily a game I'd recommend to others, especially if they're wanting a souls-like to dip their toes into the genre.
It's all fun and games until you meet firefly Smough and booby Ornstein. The real meat of this game imo is the very detailed customization and the photo mode. So many cute and cool pose and outfit.
The main thing this game has going for it is its relative accessibility and being able to freely swap classes and skills. This game is a steal at $10 or lower, but it's not great.
Relative to RPGs in general... Well, it's an action RPG. It's not about the story as much as fighting a lot, making your own builds, and watching numbers go up. So if you're excited about that, this game's got it.
As for story, common "shonen issekai" no.14, Yuyu Hakusho would be good comparison - it has emotions, pride and fight scenes with your *own* (created) character. Acting is similar to any action story, each word must be accompanied with movements of whole body (especially if characters wear a mask, just to know they are talking), and just as in Dark Souls: there are many hidden stories and nit-bits about characters/items if you are in that stuff.
Game challange is decent, if its too easy: there are 4 (if you are lucky to hit them each re-run) endings and each re-run *can be* "harder" just like in DS series, but if you find it "too challanging", unlike "Souls games" - you can just progress in strength without adding difficulty (its an option in safe area after completing story, you will have all the gears you collected and strength, but enemies reamains the same, drop will remain same as well thou - not bigger, as enemies are the same).
Its a cool appocaliptic sci-fi fantasy game with hack and slash fights and advanced mechanics like parry or back-stab. yet its not Sekiro if you seek challange... someone even called it "fashion souls spinnoff" or "weeb-souls".
Game have good replay-ability for at least once: after that, its just lore/achievement/challange hunt... but to be honest, just dont "over-play it", after first run, give yourself a decent time to play second one.... co-op is dead, so dont expect any miracles - maybe on discord.
About "grind", there are areas like "dungeons" which let player gather resources.... but the best part is: once you finish them, you can repeat them *just for boss/es*, no need to walk them whole again, you just "pop up" and go *straight* for the boss. (spawning point is near them)
As for mechanics, dont force yourself to understand them, use "try and fail"... no need to understand how back-stab or parry works, just let it grow on you, i still dont use parry even after almost 1k of gameplay hours - but its up to you.
As for companion, your taste decides: Yakumo and Io are best healers as they survive long enough and have hp to give (your companion can revive you), others depends on fighting style and personal prefferences... but AI mostly dont know how to survive. :/
As for my personal enjoyment: i created many characters that are similar to existing characters (anime/games) and rose them up from lvl1. Its grind of its own... if you *really* want to play as your favorite character from anime/game, pick a tutorial or made them by yourself! This game is just like "Anime character creator: test your character in fight!". :D
