If you like souls type games its a decent experience. Just like souls games it has its flaws, notably the not very good story or pseudo main character, but the supporting cast is quite good. Its faster paced combat than souls games and may be considered typically harder. Length is reasonably comparable to souls games, too, excluding the far larger Elden Ring.

Enemies and bosses are more unique and competent, esp the normal mobs which are often a hilarious joke in souls games.

Don't get it if you think this is Dark Souls. The combat in this game is pretty bad. Theres no weight to anything at all, theres like 3 or 4 weapon types, and dying just boils down to the NPC not reviving you like its supposed to which is frustrating. The game favors cinematic drama and beating you over the head with explaining the plot over lore you discover by playing.

Its really a harder hack and slash game with decent customization with anime aesthetic.

^Not a correct take on the game.

Dark Souls 3 has, for instance, 24 weapon types but 4 are catalyst for casting and two are ranged (bow/greatbow//xbow). This becomes 17, and many aren't popular or used by most like fist, whips, etc. Many are just slight variants of the same weapon like spikes & halberds, or arguably straight swords & katana & curved swords.

Code Vein has 5 weapon types (or if you want to split it up like Dark Souls then 8 since due to spears, halberds, polearms which are honestly very similar.

Unlike Dark Souls games, Code Vein features several weapon gift attacks and movement/input based attack variations that create a richer move variety, especially the attack gifts. You can have multiple on one weapon, too, unlike in Souls games.

They claim dying boils down to NPC not reviving you... This complaint is basically them complaining the easier mode isn't easy enough because they don't know how the NPC works. Souls games don't even have the ability to revive you so it would just be straight death at that point. NPC partner has health which they trade to revive you and give you health with their ability. However, they also have a hidden ichor value just like you (aka FP/Mana) which revive costs a small amount of. If either is too low they cannot revive you. Additionally, their revive ability has a cooldown once used so they can't just repeatedly revive you back to back due to multiple fatal errors on your end. You have this ability to revive the NPC, too, and it has the same conditions. You can also play without the NPC if you want more difficulty, just like you can solo Souls games. I can understand it being frustrating if they're not aware of the HP/ichor and CD requirement though I would honestly think it kind of obvious since you have that too... but yeah.

The story, which is still admittedly bad, doesn't really cover the lore significantly. They go hand in hand but a lot of the lore is from specific character's experiences/perspective and thus isn't really excessive or repetitive. They stand separately, overall.

The combat has weight, its just faster paced than souls games. I'm guessing they've never played games like Ninja Gaiden, Devil May Cry, Ys, or Zone of the Enders 2nd Runner. It's more like those.

It isn't really a hack and slash. It is definitely much closer to a souls game and not a mindless large kill count hack and slash. It has okay customization about similar to Souls games, though the character creator is quite good. Definitely has the anime aesthetic, though, as can be seen in the store page.

The base game + Season Pass are on sale right now for roughly £16.00, which is a great price for this game. The usual price of £56.00 for the Deluxe Edition is probably overpriced (I don't think there's any game actually justifying that price). Anyway, this is a cool game that should maintain your interest if it's already got it.
