As for weapon, the bayonet's do the least damage but it's still very possible. Getting the hang of the weapon is easy but it makes the fights last longer. I say keep the bayonet if that's what you want but have a one-handed sword for your secondary weapon if you feel you want extra damage.
Using any lightning elemental damage will deal extra damage, Avoid standing still against her always move. The first part of her fight is pretty straight forward.
The second part: When she starts spinning and shoots out the water balls. go as far away as you can from her, that will make it easier to miss the balls. But no matter what, Do not stand still. after the move, run back to her and start hitting. If she slides towards you, dodge either to the left or the right. the majority of the other moves are the same as the first stage. If she spins without shooting the water, just stay out of the spinning range.
All weapons can be used against her, but the bayonet can be very weak due to how long it makes you stand still. Without a refined build that you get later on, i wouldnt reccomend using the bayonet. Use a one handed sword for the best mobility.

IMHO, all companions are fine as they are. They just have their own distintive playstyle and WE need to get used to it. Cleared ng+ enhansed with him and he was fine. Most complaints come from people who are too lazy to get mob's attention out of him or use saveheal in time.
Yakumo's block-for-days strategy might work well but be careful with enemy's debuff attacks - debuff scale filling is NOT reduced. Fighting Mido with him... *flashbacks*... will be pure horror.
When you play with louis and watch him stand at the other side of the boss arena and only attempt to attack when the boss is down and misses then runs off again.
I have never seen a AI as useless as him. God knows why people in the cut scenes are afraid of him.
But seriously. compared to the rest of the companions, Louis doesnt really do anything to benefit the player.
Maybe he glitched at some point? He fights ok with me, even need to shift aggro sometimes
i must of got the wussy version of him. but he is on the bad end of partners
But really, devs intended him to cover your flanks while you are tanking. Once aggro shifts to him or injured, he goes dodges-for-days. I assume that is the point you see him on the arena's end? :D
Also, for me the worst partner is Mia - she gets oneshoted in bayonet mode in the cathedral
each. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. TIME
Mia has the blood sucking gift which is very amazing for getting icor and clearing up a spot.. if you keep everything away from Mia, she is great at range and support at range.
Louis' best gift is fireball. ehh. His main power overdrive Which yes, is a alright gift. but compared to the other AI isnt that good. Except jack.
Comparing Louis to Eva: Eva's shared gift of Gift speed is amazing for raw damage output you can do. Her other gifts are not that good sadly.
Comparing Louis to White Mia: White Mia gives you gift extension Which can stack on yours.
to Yakumo: Yakumo is a tank. He eats damage and dishes damage out alot. and can help with the overall game. unless he decides that he doesnt want to revive you.
To Jack. Nope, i have nothing, louis is better there.
To IO. How can we compare IO to louis. She is arguably the best Partner in the game.
You might like him, Which all to ya, Go ahead and enjoy playing with him. there is nothing wrong with that. and yes its all depending on playstyle like you said. I just personally dont see a point for a newer player to use him. when they have a chance to use one of the better partners. (BTW, stuff mido. he can go drown in a hole.)
We should really discuss this outside of this discussion xD. its a little off topic there.
I added you if you do want to actually talk about it
