It's not. I'm not sure how you thought it was optional considering there's one of the things you're after. I initially thought (before I explored further) that it was optional too, but it's part of the story.

you just said you thought so too, luis even says in the cutscene we should go back so its not really a strech ... on top of that i have another area unexplored which was less hidden

I thought so when I found the hole. Once I went in and a cutscene played, I was pretty sure it was mandatory and since a cutscene plays at almost the start of that entire area..

It became pretty obvious that way, to me anyway
