Smurfs?
Why are so many people playing on smurf accounts? They're killing the game for new players and it makes me wonder what quality of life they actually have?

Probably because the ranking system is completely and totally useless for matching equally skilled players.

Your ranking NEVER goes down when you lose, so over time you will eventually be a rank far above your actual skill level, leading to every single match you get placed into being a hilariously one sided stomp.

When you create a smurf account, there's a short period of time where you are matched against weaker players, but you rank up quickly and are soon placed against people equal to your skill level again (ie the matches go back and forth and either player can win)

Eventually over time your rank will climb above your actual skill level, and once again you will be matched against players who can get a perfect victory against you every time because you can't even touch them. It's basically the equivalent of Michael Jordan playing one on one basketball against a handicapped 5 yr old.

If losing a match made your ranking go down, it would massively decrease the need for players to create smurf accounts. It would make smurf accounts useless for nothing but stomping on noobs.

I personally decided to just stop playing against other people entirely rather than make a smurf account. These days I just stick with the arcade mode playing against the computer and challenging myself to beat my own high scores.

If smurfing wasn't frowned upon, I would totally make a smurf account so that eventually I could start getting matched against people near my skill level again.

Very fair point, this is something I had actually feared. I feel myself reaching my skill cap until I learn how to master the 3 characters chosen. I lose very few points for losing but gain a fair few when I win and surely I'm going to hit that level when I just get stomped every game lol.

Not sure why I'm moaning though because I won't touch this game when Sparking Zero comes out.

Not totally accurate, mine sure did just the other day. Happens when you keep losing to much lower ranked people. There are some absolute naturals out there...

Not that I'm all that invested in ranks, but it would have been kinda nice to get the achievement after all the grinding for the other ones. For a sense of completion mostly. But I play these games for the preposterous fun, rather than a full education with an extremely narrow real world applicability. So I'm not going to prepare a thesis on cancel frames or whatever, let alone intern in Prof. Pfister's Large Hitbox Collider team for a few years.

Last I checked, your rank went up even if you only lost, just slower than if you were winning. But it only does that to a certain extent, which I don't know how it works currently. You should lose points at 1 million bp for sure for losing, especially against your own rank.

Well, I can't remember exactly when I last checked, but it was this week. Certainly after the patch. And I'm quite sure your rank goes down when you lose thousands of points after losing to some innocent Earthling when you have a couple of ranks on him. So can we just consider this particular point settled now?

When I had my bp reset due to a bug when Baby came out (a few people had that problem), I remember still gaining bp when losing near the start of ranking up. So this should only apply very early in ranked and then gradually stop to where you lose bp for losing. Opponent's rank is also a factor. But all this means that you can't get back to 0 bp and below a certain threshold after a while. If you manage to do it then they've changed it since

That guy is from Xbox, I know him and he plays very good.

There is a lot of people switching from console to PC, not everybody is a smurf, I was playing on Xbox, PS4 and Switch the last years and I saw a lot of players from console on PC recently.

technically by definition they're still smurfs; just not intentionally smurfing for stupid reasons like resetting score or just fighting with an unfair advantage over lower ranked players

It's true not everyone is a smurf/troll; I used to play on Xbox at launch on & off until 2022 when I stopped playing Xbox altogether because they've fallen off nowadays imo.
I waited for DBFZ to be on sale for $7 then picked it up for PC, & from my experience there's definitely all skill levels still playing.
Just remember this game came out in 2018, so you may lose a lot at 1st if you're new. Normal occurrence in fighting games, then before you even realize it you're learning when to block/attack & you're getting much better.
Also remember not to recklessly super-dash constantly, the #1 thing new players should remember I'd say, or you'll eat 2H full combo-starters all day.

Wrong. once you get past the low ranks, you do in fact, lose points on a loss.

You already are playing at your skill level. You aren't even a high enough rank to lose points when you lose a match. Resetting your points and smurfing isn't going to do much for you boss.

Go into the game view every lobby for every region add them all up then subtract 25% for ring matches and you have your answer. The steam player count isn't actually representative of the player amount actually playing the game at a given time online. It's generally 2-3x less.
