What does it mean that it has 50% chance to gib zombies?

Gib, or Gibing is when you destroy someone so hard, they explode into pieces, so you have a 50 percent chance to explode zombies with a shotgun.

You can turn off gore in the options which also removes gibs, so I'm pretty sure it's just cosmetic.
