Zoom trick on a 1440p screen?

Have seen lots of people with the game zoomed out simply by changing the resolution but, for me on a 1440p screen, I dont have the 1360x768 res there. Those I do have all put black bars around the picture and dont actually zoom out that far. Also seen people mention doing it via commands in the tilde menu but hell if I know what v_forced_aspect_ratio to use. Tried a few and I always end up with large black bars along the top and bottom.
Anyone got it working fine at 1440p?

you'll always end up with black bars unless you play windowed, or use cheats and adjust it with zoom rather than forcing it via aspect ratio.

i was playing around with the resolutions and aspect ratios on my 1440p monitor and i have found the 1366x768 resolution offers the best view overall

but at 2560x1440 i find
v_forced_aspect_ratio 1.9 looks/works best at this resolution
