are pets worth it?

In my expert opinion, the cat and dog are worthless the imp is good, the raven and wyrm are great. Once you can have the second fountain upgrade and can clear to the third boss you should be able to get the 25k for the imp rather easy.
If you use mods there is a mod that makes them even better though.

Just don't get them too early (don't save 3-4 runs worth of money).
