+Gold effects stacking and farming gold (why not to use thief)
tldr: +Gold effects stack additively. The thief gold find passive is therefore pointless for gold farming unless you can clear and farm as fast as, say, a high level sorcerer who insta-clears rooms with all negatives activated on the fountain. Thieves do not get double gold vs other classes (it is about 18% more with most fountain effects on). It is only double if you have no other gold bonuses, and even the thief guild bonus makes it less than double.

I have seen a ton of people saying to use a thief to farm gold, but this is probably outdated and from before the fountain was changed.The best way I have found to farm gold in NG0, therefore, is to take my level 20 sorcerer, put on every negative fountain effect except the one that kills you in one hit, add the gold potion, then run through the mines to the boss and dump/quit, then spend it on another character to keep taxes low. Alternatively, I may run through the 3rd boss and quit (that boss takes too long to be efficient, and taxes start being relevant around this point). On my thief, I am not able to clear even the mines nearly as quickly or safely with all of the fountain effects on, and if you start disabling some of them (like the extra elites one) then you are defeating the purpose of the thief gold bonus.


Math:

I have a thief (+100%) with the tavern potion (+100%), +5% from guild, and fountain effects stacked to +345%.

I picked up a 1 point coin, and got 7. A 50 point diamond became 325. This means gold effect items are additive, in other words, all +gold effects are added together, then multiplied.

If the fountain effects were multiplicative with the character sheet (which I feel they should be), then 1 gold drop would be 3.05 (thief+potion+passive) * 4.45 (fountain) = 13.57 gold. Since they are actually additive, it is a total of +550% gold, and 1 * 6.5 = 6.5 (it rounds up to 7), or in the case of the diamond, 50 * 6.5 = 325 (exact).

So for sake of comparison, lets say you want to run with all of the fountain and potion bonuses listed above. A thief will have +550% gold, and a sorcerer will have +450% (6.5 multiplier vs 5.5). In this case, the thief will get 18% more gold than the sorcerer. But the sorcerer will have way more survivability and can safely clear entire rooms instantly, especially with all the extra monster density from the fountain effects (more monsters = easier chain reaction room clears).

In fairness, you may use "Offshore Accountant" from the fountain if you plan on doing a full clear with a large gold total. This lowers the fountain bonus in my previous example to +275%. In this case, the thief would have a 5.8 multiplier (+480%) and another class would have a 4.8 multiplier (+380%). That would be 21% more gold for the thief. Again, I think other classes can clear much more than 21% faster with all the fountain negatives turned on, and certainly a lot safer. I probably clear 2-3x as fast on my sorcerer.

He is right, its going away.

But also its worth noting. You don't want to farm gold, you want to farm ore. Ore isn't taxed and can be turned in for gold at any time.
