Thief's playstyle is more of a rhytmic play, I guess, just like some characters in 2D-fighters. In theory, you can very effectively stop projectiles if you "feel" the speed, distance and aiming delay of it, but, practically, it's too flocking difficult, so I would rather pick another class
If I will meet a good thief, I will ask his secret.
Yup, Thief is awesome!
I ended one of my many 12-man hosting runs tonight with two other Thiefs and a paladin in act3-5.
As the reapers spawned in the boss fight of Act 3, we killed it before it did anything. So we just stood there with blades waving like mad and bosses dying in seconds.
The eye boss died so quick his orbits were still orbiting after he teleported away. lol
Thief is super mobile, too. Using hook to stun enemies, and slice and dice everything while running and spaming attacks, clearing entire rooms with fan of knives.
And his stacking damage buff from gold is amazing. I didn't use the loot drop off once, so I had 250k gold by the time I was in act5. That's 500% damage increase! Unstoppable!
You can get away with one point in grapple and stun bomb. That gives you fantastic mobility and a whopping 4 second stun aoe to clean up. His normal attack breaks projectiles if you time it correctly.
He is high risk high reward and I love 'em to death.

Actually, the Thief's evasion skill is absolutely fantastic! If there was ever going to be anything to counter his low health pool, it would be this. Combined with the deflection from his primary attack, it's extremely difficult to actually land a decent hit on him - that is EXACTLY what the Thief's playstyle is all about ;)
No clue, don't remember the exact figures but I had at minimum 350K on me (almost 0 gold in town, didnt send back gold once) and got somewhere between 110-150K back when I started over. Numbers aren't exact, was just guestimating from what I remember.
200% gold gain is pretty good if you get some "Something good/greats" with the fountain.
spell power? attack power?
Skill power. The easiest way to confirm is to use dummies and skill power increase.
By the way, Thief really benefits from mana increasing items.
Thief is squishy but stop playing him like a pally and you'll realize how amazing he is. Probably the same boat of people who moaned about Warlocks being way too OP, but these same people never hit level 20 and played past NG++ to see how stupid crazy their class is to actually justify a nerf or a buff.
On that note, my thief started being amazing pretty much amazing lev 10+. Can solo just about any boss, any floor, spamming knives and circling around things all day long carrying my stack of gp giving me crazy damage buffs. Learn to play people, and actually look at the skills the classes have to figure out how to build a proper character instead of randomly throwing your skill points on skills that doesn't compliment your play style or how the class should perform.
