So whats up with Thief?
He's totally subpar like he is in hammerwatch 1, i see absolutely nothing good about this char over paladin. Paladin can heal, tank and block 100% projectiles in a 60-180 degree arc depending on your shield upgrades. He even gets whirlwind and dash to weave in and out of mobs and never get stuck.

Thief can die in 1-2 hits, no heals, no way to weave in and out of mobs, knife spam and move fast while attacking. This char really needs a buff and maybe even mechanically changed cause right now he just sucks.

Grappling hook is cool but deals no damage and you can't get out of tight situations if your surronded, so really whats the point?

Having low hp is fine if your trying to make a "glass cannon" type of char but in roguelikes this is the type of build or characters people avoid. Unless there is a reasonable positive to go with playing a high risk class whereas thief is a turd paladin so why even have him in your game?

I do feel the evasion skill should be changed though, for the reasons I stated earlier. Regardless of his power, that skill does not complement his playstyle and skillset.

I actually saw some really good players in original one, but, suprisingly, noone picks him here

Thief's playstyle is more of a rhytmic play, I guess, just like some characters in 2D-fighters. In theory, you can very effectively stop projectiles if you "feel" the speed, distance and aiming delay of it, but, practically, it's too flocking difficult, so I would rather pick another class :Neko:

If I will meet a good thief, I will ask his secret.

Since I just finished a post talking about my latest experience with it I'll paste it here as it's very relevant

Thief is by far the most broken OP thing in the game once leveled. I just finished a run with my freshly 20 thief where I was hitting for around 500 with both melee & spammable tossed daggers..I even had a crit for 4924. Three of the bosses, including dragon, didn't get a single move off they died so fast. I hit low hp twice due to my being suicidal, I ran full speed into everything, and did a full clear looting everything in I think 2.5 hours. Pulled 125k gold after taxes (390k before) and over 200 ore into my town. His last passive doubles your cash and makes you do insane damage.with the more cash you're carrying..

For skills I maxed his primary, all three passives, and I think throwing daggers is at rank 3.

Yup, Thief is awesome!

I ended one of my many 12-man hosting runs tonight with two other Thiefs and a paladin in act3-5.

As the reapers spawned in the boss fight of Act 3, we killed it before it did anything. So we just stood there with blades waving like mad and bosses dying in seconds.

The eye boss died so quick his orbits were still orbiting after he teleported away. lol

Thief is super mobile, too. Using hook to stun enemies, and slice and dice everything while running and spaming attacks, clearing entire rooms with fan of knives.

And his stacking damage buff from gold is amazing. I didn't use the loot drop off once, so I had 250k gold by the time I was in act5. That's 500% damage increase! Unstoppable!

He's a little tricky to get started, but once you get some damage, crit chance, and a few levels of hit knife and throwing knives in, he's godlike.

You can get away with one point in grapple and stun bomb. That gives you fantastic mobility and a whopping 4 second stun aoe to clean up. His normal attack breaks projectiles if you time it correctly.

He is high risk high reward and I love 'em to death.

Max out his primary attack and evasion as early as possible, then get the Gold Fever once you're tier 4/tier 5. Maxed evasion gives you a 1-in-4 chance to completely avoid getting hit by projectiles, while the super-fast attack speed allows you to 'chop' projectiles out of the air. Slice & Dice gives you movement speed bonuses per kill too. Any lifesteal you can get, take it. Take a look at my video (shameless plug :p) and watch the aiming line - I constantly keep it pointing towards ranged enemies and target them above everything else. Quite a few times you'll see me simply cutting down the wisp's projectiles then charging through the group with no regard for safety xD

Actually, the Thief's evasion skill is absolutely fantastic! If there was ever going to be anything to counter his low health pool, it would be this. Combined with the deflection from his primary attack, it's extremely difficult to actually land a decent hit on him - that is EXACTLY what the Thief's playstyle is all about ;)

Thief is the definition of high risk high reward type play style. Once you obtain the passives that increase your attack power based on the amount of gold you are carrying, you can become a madhouse in dmg if you never send any of it home. However, you are still a fragile little feather. You need to play evasive to not just get obliterated.

Granted I've only been playing through NG to farm, thief is insane. I went dagger build on chapel (mana regen etc) and I just never turn in gold and can SPAM daggers for 500 crits past the first few floors. You have to upgrade stuff, you have the 1000 ore achieve but not much else so you could be prioritizing wrong or just inefficiency. I can literally one shot A3 bosses and kill final boss I under 5 seconds. And if anyone else was curious doing the whole game without turning in doesn't let you keep everything (350k gold turn into under 150k in town).

Either i dont know something or you sound fishy about gold. Even with around 120k gold and max tax upgrade i already get around 85% tax...So idk how you can turn 350k into 150k, thats less then 60% tax...

No clue, don't remember the exact figures but I had at minimum 350K on me (almost 0 gold in town, didnt send back gold once) and got somewhere between 110-150K back when I started over. Numbers aren't exact, was just guestimating from what I remember.

use him for his gold fever.
200% gold gain is pretty good if you get some "Something good/greats" with the fountain.
TheTycoon Mar 12, 2018 @ 8:49pm
Thief absolutely dominates with maxed gold fever during normal runs as long as you don't deposit. Can easily solo a 4-person game. Haven't taken mine into NG+ yet because he is how I will finance all of my other heroes.
Lapper Mar 12, 2018 @ 8:55pm
Same here, Thief is tough to get used to at first but if you put in the time to learn his style and upgrade him, his burst damage is unlike anything else. The gold is fantastic as well, easily 100k if you run the dungeon front to back.
what status make throwing knives strong?
spell power? attack power?

Skill power. The easiest way to confirm is to use dummies and skill power increase.

By the way, Thief really benefits from mana increasing items.

Still on this thief thing? People who complain about the classes and asking for buffs or nerfs need to stop complaining and actually play their class, and understand each class plays very differently.

Thief is squishy but stop playing him like a pally and you'll realize how amazing he is. Probably the same boat of people who moaned about Warlocks being way too OP, but these same people never hit level 20 and played past NG++ to see how stupid crazy their class is to actually justify a nerf or a buff.

On that note, my thief started being amazing pretty much amazing lev 10+. Can solo just about any boss, any floor, spamming knives and circling around things all day long carrying my stack of gp giving me crazy damage buffs. Learn to play people, and actually look at the skills the classes have to figure out how to build a proper character instead of randomly throwing your skill points on skills that doesn't compliment your play style or how the class should perform.
