Difference Between HoH and Hammerwatch
I don't have either games so I don't really know the difference. I'm planning to pick up Hammerwatch since it's just 2 dollars, but what makes this game a worthy successor to the first game? What's new or different about it? Just going by the video and screenshots on the store page it looks pretty much the same to me. Also, would I even need Hammerwatch if I get this game instead? Kind of like how Left4Dead1 is pretty much obsolete if you have Left4Dead2 since it has everything from the first game in it anyway?

Hammerwatch is two campaign adventure game (fully "hand crafted") with no procedural lvl and ton of secret to discover. You can play 5 classes, and money you ll gain will be more enought to upgrade yourself during the adventure. It s cool alone but WAY better with friends. ^^

Heroes of hammerwatch is the rogue lite experience (with procedurals lvl anda logical progression like the base game do) with way more farm/grind to unlock characters and merchants that will sell you upgrades and stuff.

-The first is better with friends if you play at same time regularly (You have nothing to farm) and if you finish the two dev campaigns, workshop is here for ya !

^ a good synopsis of both games.

I've played both with friends, and while Hammerwatch is a fun game to play through a few times to try to find all the secrets, the replay value is just so-so for me. Once you 100% it, replaying it is the same experience over and over.

HoH has higher replay value for me because you can level up and build your character(s), grow your town (which will allow you to further upgrade your hero), all of which helps your hero get stronger each time you play which allows you to progress further and further. And you cam also acquire upgrades that will help you farm need resources faster per run, so as you progress you'r means of processing increases as well. Once you finally reach the end of the tower (campaign) and beat it, your hero's level cap increases and a harder difficulty opens up. Beat that one, and your cap increases further and an even harder difficulty opens. As I understand it, you can continue this ad infinitum.

And in HoH, your town is shared between all heroes but each hero has their own profession. Levels, skill points, equipment upgrades, spell upgrades, item-drop/craftable upgrades, monster research, companions, etc are all hero-specific.

I believe both games are worth buying and worth playing.
I'd recommend starting with Hammerwatch first, and then moving to HoH later when you feel like you might be getting bored with the former. But the call is ultimately yours to make.

Edit: also of note, it's nice to know that Steam and non-steam HoH can still play together. I haven't tested this with Hammerwatch, but myself and a friend have HoH on a different PC launcher, and we can still play with friends who bought their copy here.

Hammerwatch is more akin to the classic Gauntlet. It's a great game with simpler controls and simpler progression.

Heroes of Hammerwatch has a more complex gameplay, with more interactive controlers (twin-stick shooter), a very deep progression, and much more replayability due to that and the fact that it's a roguelite with infinite scalablity.

The only advantage of original Hammerwatch imo is the local co-op, which Heroes of Hammerwatch doesn't have. Or if you're looking for a simpler/oldschool gameplay in general.
Oh yeah, if you do get Hammerwatch, immediately check your settings. You can enable Mouse Aim and Hold To Attack which are huge QoL features that I did not know existed for the first 10-20 hours I played the game lol
Hmm, thanks for the answers, I'll see if I can get my friend to check it out with me
