That's how my playthrough went, too. But, I picked all of the choices during that confrontation where the MC chooses to remain in ignorant bliss versus listening to the truth that Sunder wants to tell them, so I took that to mean that the MC kind of missed the whole "I need space" speech and everything we (the player) saw was just what the MC wanted to hear. I assumed there'd be some follow-up or clarification on that later, but both Sunder -and- the MC acted like they knew what had happened afterwards, which was rather confusing. That whole ending with him felt kind of rough and unfinished, to be honest.
Sunder broke my heart, horibly, hope they add a better finale if you do things right by him!
