Regarding how to build your tech priest in the beginning, there have been a lot of posts about it. Search the forums a bit, but in general, go for Cognition Points.
One error that people often make is that they focus too much on ONE techpriest. The increasing Blackstone cost of additional skills makes it far better to get 2 or 3 techpriests levelled up simultanously, instead of having 1 techpriest ahead.
Another error that people often make is that they don't notice you can bring more than one troop for each mission. You can actually bring a lot, and they help a great deal at the beginning.
Now I'm on break because the game glitched out while I was buying legs and I ended up with -600 Blackstone, and the game apparently doesn't autosave when you complete missions (But it will autosave in the middle of fights?), and I'm getting angry again.
This game just really doesn't want to be loved, no matter how hard I try.
You can win any early mission by spamming servitors, even the destroyer mission.
