It's worth playing once using only troops and 1-2 Secutors as it completely changes the game though.
Late game, the ability to call in a Kataphron or Kastellan for a single cog ANYWHERE ON THE MAP is freakn' awesome. Like I can do that turn one, so even if the Secutor isn't much himself he's got a big dangerous buddy to help him compete.
The movement/damage/crit buff from the servo skull is also amazing at buffing up a 'pet'. I mean, with that +4 movement even a servitor can boogie.
And the cooldown buff to the brain-in-a-jar essentially means you can buff them for one attack every/other turn, which is nice.
Pity that you only get access to that toward the end of the game.
