Great question, as we've not released gameplay yet I can understand people want to try and draw similarities to another game.
Mechanicus is not a direct "like" to any single game, and The Caestus Metallica is a good way of showing that were not XCOM.
To answer directly, this isn't like the Avenger, you don't upgrade it in anyway. It's a Ark Mechanicus class cruiser that the player is able to interact with the units and characters in the game.
It doesn't make it any less of a game, the focus is elsewhere. Mechanicus focuses on an adjustable story based on the choices you make, it focuses a lot more on the units that you control, the customisation of them. Our troops units (servitors, Skitarii and more) are a very unique mechanic to Turn-Based Tactical games of this scale. The resource management is unique in the choices that are made using them. Etc.

I only feel it's fair to point out that Mechanicus is not X or Y game, because if you expect X or Y, then when you start playing it doesn't have A, B or C feature that game X has, then that's, in most cases, disappointing. I know I've been there. It's hard to get out of that mindset once your in it, you know.
I'm sure the game will speak for itself once it's out in the wild :)
Blasphemy! there is no such thing as 'overkill' on w40k universe.
My greatest of apologies my grand Magos Psycholord , I'll commission the servitors to creat weapon crabs out of our next batch of Tech-Priest recruits
We will receive access to the more advance systems with in-game progress?
Can weapons receive modification, upgrades?
Volkie, and Ark weapons are available :)
Yes weapons will get so much better the further into the game you go.
The last one is a bit of a spoiler so we'll come back to that later ;)
This is getting better and better, but the two most important question for me,is it turn based? Mac support? Like the last XCom games, Stellaris,
Cogitators confirm both Turn-Based genre and MAC support. Data is extracted from Steam Store page, Magos DIRHEIM.
Mechanicus is not an Xcom-like. Similarities could be drawn, like it's Turn-Based & there's a squad, but that's all :) the rest is fun exciting Mechanicus-ness.
Oh most certainly!
Why get your well trained Tech-Priests to do the dirty work when lesser lifeforms can do it for you
(Are there going to be steam trading cards for badges and backgrounds? Also, will the trading cards when extended feature really nice art? Like the type we might use for a desktop background?
Like this trading card from spacehulk deathwing http://cdn.edgecast.steamstatic.com/steamcommunity/public/images/items/298900/2e64b8f3fbb29610830785ddc1450995680bd64c.jpg )
