Dusk if you want some high speed, explosive and satisfying gunplay and extremely creative level design. Seriously I can't stress enough how good the level design is - there were several sections where I was gasping out loud at how creative and well executed they were - easily some of the best I've ever seen in an FPS. The 3 episodes also tell a simple but cohesive story that feels like it has a beginning, middle and end. There's also multiplayer and endless if you're into that. Dusk is the whole package.
Second Place:
Amid Evil has been really fun so far, but the levels bleed together and are not as memorable. While it has some great weapons, the gunplay doesn't have the punch that Dusk has.
Third Place:
Ion Maiden (at least in the demo level) has been all looks and no substance to me. Samey feeling enemies and weapons lead to samey gameplay. Level design is OK but nothing inspiring. Out of all these it's the most retro looking but plays the worst.
Another good old school style shooter just released
wrath? you mean that game that isnt out yet? we will see if its any good when its out.
Dusk - the only issue I have with this game is, surprisingly, the level design. Levels look great (stylistically), atmosphere kicks *ss, and all of that - but the layout can be a bit...eeeh. Depending on the map, they can just feel a bit too confined sometimes which feels contrary to how freaking insanely fast your character can move. Great in open areas where you can hop around on sh*t and blast everything, but not so much in hallways and rooms with milti-floor scaffolding and tons of stuff to get caught on. Those areas become a bit more about peek-a-boo and funnel tactics, which for me, isn't quite as fun which is fine, but it also feels contrary to the game design as well. The endless (endless waves of enemies) maps are also way too small in my opinion.
Despite the size of that paragraph though, it's a bit of a nitpick. Each level has a bit of both open and corridor...y littered throughout and in general it all comes together into a great, if not somewhat short, game. Guns and all of that are very punchy and feel great to use, rocket jumps exist of course (which can sequence break which is fun), secrets are dope (some are totally crazy and just for fun), map/level concepts are awesome (Escher Labs, Homecoming, etc.), music is freaking kick *ss metal, and so on. Also has some awesome shader options that makes even an avid Reshade user like me (literally every game) decide it's not necessary. It's a great game.
Amid Evil - the only issue I have with this game is the jump, that's about it. It just feels too gimped/low, has an awkward acceleration and your shoes transform into ice for a moment when you land, and these things can make some of the platforming stuff a bit frustrating in my opinion, especially a certain rotating room in a certain later map (even though the room looks awesome, and has a great optical illusion when you stand on any of the platforms inside and look up).
That being said...man, this game is amazing as well. The music is less metal (outside of a few tracks during battles) and a bit more atmospheric, with metal tones, and is beautiful. The level concepts just kick *ss, especially visually. Not just stylistic graphics either - I'm talking awesome uses of backface culling in certain maps like Hexed Passage (seriously cool entrance to this level if you pay attention to it) and the optical illusions like the one I mentioned above in the Forge. This game is full of visual mastery and I freaking love it. Arcane Expanse is just an amazing episode. Gunplay and all of that is also very punchy and satisfying, especially some of the secondary effects weapons have and even a few unique death animations depending on the weapon (Trident of course comes to mind). Secrets are a bit less about blowing up walls and more about exploring the innards and outards of maps, finding crouch-vents and so on, so a little less interactivity there (outside of a few hidden switches), but also a little less obvious most of the time (no cracks in walls and such). Bosses are also better, although Dusk has some pretty hilarious (and one iconic) bosses, AE's are just better fights in general. Both can be cheesed though if you know how.
So for me, Amid Evil takes it, but it is very close.
Buy them all though!!! ! We need sequels to all 3 games. :-)
Unless, Wrath : Aeon of Ruin in the coming weeks/months changes my mind, Amid Evil is my Classic FPS Game Of The Year.
Rubbish may be a bit too harsh, but yes, I personally vastly prefer DUSK and AMID EVIL from a gameplay-perspective.
I was always a bigger fan of the "ID-Shooter-School". Meaning I have always prefered actually being able to dodge the majority of projectiles and enemies, instead of fighting mainly hitscanners. The ID-way means I can be in the open most of the time, strafing, dodging and shooting. In the Build-Engine-games it was more about using cover to your advantage.
And this is one of the biggest flaws of Ion Fury. The huge open levels are awesome from a visual perspective, but they don´t mix THAT well with the Build Engine Gameplay in my opinion.
What doesn´t help either is that the Weapon-loadout lacks a real standout; which is a shame as especially the Build Engine Games were known for pretty un-ordinary weaponry.
A game like DUSK isn´t really inventive in its weaponry either, but in my opinion DUSKs weapons are way more satisfying to use (Double Barrel, Riveter).
Now that may sound pretty negative, but I actually really like Ion Fury; just not as much as those other 2 oldschoool-throwback-shooters. Ion Fury is now my 2nd favorite Build Engine-Title; yes, even before Duke and Shadow Warrior. Only Blood still stands on my no. 1 spot when it comes to Build Engine-Shooters.
You can actually dodge enemy fire in Ion Fury by strafing before they shoot, so it's not completely hitscan. That said, hitscan isn't the reason why the gameplay sucks - it's lack of distinctive enemy types and weaponry.
Dusk's weapons are not only more satisfying to use, they are distinct and interact with the varied enemy types in interesting ways.
Ion Maiden gameplay actually reminds me of CoD since almost all the enemies are humanoid and behave in exactly the same way. Dull as dishwater.
Yeah I'd have to disagree for personal reasons. I was a build engine guy so the build games with their 2.5d and sprites / voxels were always more enjoyable for me. The rudimentary looking 3d games during this time period just didn't have the same charm. Personally I also enjoy the explosive weaponry, more difficult enemies, limited ammo and ammo management, as well as the multitude of secrets encountered in Ion Fury. If you play on the highest difficult with autoaim disabled you need perfect aim and fast reflexes ..it just feels very satisfying to headshot enemies on the run. IF is almost the perfect build game imo. I respect everyone's opinion though as AE and Dusk are truly amazing as well. :)
