Wouldn't it slightly make more sense to use China, maybe even Wagner Mercs ?

Think about it, Russia is currently the second strongest military in Ukraine. And temporarily were the second strongest in Russia itself when Wagner turned on them.

I can kinda see why they avoided China as most of their military equipment are hard knock offs of anything US/NATO.

Id even take NATO on NATO forces as that's really the only realistic match up. Maybe a British faction, Finland would be cool.

Edit: To anyone salty and with the made up believe Russia has been a strong military power, this is just one of the many events in history to add to the books. For example, 1905, 1917, 1920, 1945, 1989, 1996, etc.

There's a lot of ignorance from the OP's post. Here are some clarifications to debunk some of the OP's myths and misconceptions:

1) Russia is NOT losing the war in Ukraine:

Whatever is said on Google is mostly western propaganda. CNN, BBC, Fox News, FT, AP, CNBC, Bloomberg - none of them can be trusted. The reality is that, according to Scott Ritter and Colonel Douglas, Ukraine has a 10 to 1 death ratio versus Russia - every 1 Russian dead is 10 Ukrainians dead.

The "news" about Ukraine regaining large swathes of territory last year is not Ukraine winning - it's Russia pulling back on purpose to build trenches. Russia doesn't want Western Ukraine as they only want the eastern Russian-occupied regions.

Ukraine, conversely, is losing nearly all of its NATO-given equipment since they don't have the experience to use them wisely.

EDIT: Oh, by the way, about Wagner's group - of the 25000 who marched towards Moscow, only 1/3 showed up. It wasn't an insurrection - most likely the Wagner Chief just wanted to get Putin's attention that the war is dragging on for too long. And Russia's army, now with 300,000+ more people mobilized, is 1.6 million-strong. Can 8000 Wagner soldiers really be superior to the entire Russian army?

2) China's weapons are NOT knock-offs of the west:

China has developed several stealth fighters - J20, FC31 on its own, with many differences from western-style stealth fighters, becoming the 2nd country in the world after the USA to do so. It also is developing its H20 stealth bomber, which will likely debut this year.

Apart from it, China has developed its own supercarrier, strategic bomber, helicopter carrier, nuclear subs, tanks, hand-held, ballistic subs, and stealth destroyers - about 90% of all components are made within China.

As of now, China has hundreds of hypersonic missiles, including an infinite range hypersonic glide vehicle, and quantum satellites, which even the USA does not have.
