Why such huge updates.
When I try to play game it goes straight to an update meaning I'm stuck waiting for hours. Its happened a few times but this is the biggest update so far. This update is 38GB according to Steam. Why so big?

the updates are small (1-2gb), they just patch 75gb of data, you don't actually download the entire thing

read what the download window says

I'm looking at it right now and it tells me the 38GB update will take over 500 mins at the current rate. Crazy.

that estimation is usually off unless you're on a mechanical drive and weak cpu

Yea it varies, now it shows 62 mins. 2.2GB downloaded so far of 38GB. Maybe one day this week I'll get to play it,unless I get another update.

i just told you, it doesn't download 38gb, it patches that amount of data, the download is 1.7gb

unreal engine games are made of several big files (paks) and the only way to patch it without downloading the entire game is to unpack the pak file, patch the data, and then repack the pak files

I'm just telling you what it says in the download window. So far 2.9 GB of the download of 38GB. No mention of 1.7GB and the download bar is nearly at 10%.

if it's actually downloading 38gb then it failed the crc check due to data corruption

for me it was 1.7gb download, 75gb patched data

Either way it's damned annoying to have to wait this long just to play a game and like I said before this isn't the first large update I've had to sit through. I've only had the game a couple of weeks. I think I'll do what MeGa said and reinstall the game.

well that's how ue4 works, maybe ue5 will change it but it won't apply to ue4 games retroactively

Lots of games compress their data into a single/few huge file/s, which means that the game only has to reference those files for everything which I 'believe' improves performance and stability... Trouble is any update, no matter how small, means you have to update the ENTIRE file.

Please note I'm NOT a programmer or games designer.
