Is the russian dub the best way to go?
I really liked playing metro in russian with english subs. this dialogue seems like theres too much being said even in combat for me to keep up. should I just go with english despite how bad the lines are? is the russian one better and the lines i miss mid combat wont change anything? really wanna play this game its just the dialogue is really holding me back.

I thought the english was ok. A lot of what people don’t like about the protagonist (being an a* hole, being repetitive, being blind to his boss’s agenda) kinda makes sense when you find out about his brain trauma and what the scientists did to repair it near the end of the game.

So I’ll say: go for it and enjoy the robo-smashing festival in the language of your convenience. Even if it sounds “bad”, you can just pretend it’s “extra immersive” ;)

For most of the game it won't matter because the battles are slow enough to glance at the subtitles (and most of what they say is superfluous anyway).

But, during the final battle, you won't have time to read. They attack you very fast and you have only a split second to react, so you'll will miss a lot of good character character development and revelation if you're reading (unless you pause the game or record the screen).

If you want, you can play with subtitles for most of the game, and just switch to English audio for the boss battles.

Being fluent in English and native in Russian and seeing pretty much whole game in both languages, I can say that you aren't missing much by playing with English voices. There are upsides and downsides to both. Side characters (like talking corpses) are worse in English, while main characters are better in English. They completely blew it with Granny Zina in Russian, voice actress is much younger and does a sloppy job voice acting. Play with English VO if you understand it.

Main character talks just as much in English, there are no differences in amount of content.

really appreciate this! surprising to hear the main characters voices are better in english. like every line ive seen in english makes me cringe. i was only thinking about russian cause i dont speak it and thats where the game came from. my only worry about doing so would be missing any important info mid combat.

i tried going russian dub but the amount of dialogue happening during gameplay made me miss out on a lot of conversations bc id constantly have to read mid combat or exploration. needless to say not optimal. the english dub is okay i think. its a bit sad that they dont use a more russian accent (just as stockhausen uses a german accent but here we are.

Originally I thought so, but you miss out on a lot of the story even with subtitles, because you are focused on the game. Sometimes the dialogue happens during combat where you can't even stop.

I started with Russia VO, but 3-4 hours in, switched to English. English is slightly annoying, but I guess you get used to it eventually.
