Their main gripe seems to be about the map. The map is indeed an eyesore for the first few minutes. Once you stop being a baby about it (because it's different), the map is easy to follow and it's not unnecessarily cluttered. Any potential shortfalls the map may have for some people is made up for by way point prompts. You literally can't get lost.

I'm sure their opinion isn't biased in anyway to where they can conveniently use any excuse to protest the developer...

No the map IS bad, the main problem is that you can't zoom out to see everything more globally, and it's really slow to move the camera around. Also if we could put a marker on it... but that's bonus.
